 Jope's Adit

The two adits of the South Caradon mine open out onto the Seaton Valley floor. This was the lowest level at which water could be naturally drained out of the mine. Jope's Adit can be seen from the footpath beneath Jope's shaft dumps, amidst some undergrowth.

Although the adit is now run in, water still issues out from the ground forming the source of a short stream. Drainage is therefore still occurring from the workings via this, the lower of the two adits.

Adits such as these formed an important part of a mines drainage system. Not only did they drain all the workings situated above their level but reduced the height of lift required by the pump engines.
In this case Jope's engine would discharge to this level and not up to the height of the engine house.
