The copper that provided so much wealth for South Caradon mine lay in lodes that crossed into the West Caradon Sett. West Caradon Mine struck rich deposits within these lodes, and for several years its output was greater than its famous neighbour.

This map shows the layout of the main lodes within the West Caradon Sett and is portion of a Geological Map of the Caradon and Ludcott mining District produced in 1863. Because the Kilmar Junction Railway has still to be built the Gonamena incline plain of the LCR was still in use.
The Geology
West Caradon's sett lies within the Bodmin Moor granite with the killas boundary found just to the south (close north of Crows Nest Village). The map shows lodes  in red and cross courses in grey, An east-west trend to the lodes  is clearly visible, a feature common to copper and tin lodes in Cornwall outside of Penwith. The lodes all underlie to the north and two northerly cross-courses are shown running across the sett, the easterly one causing some heaving of the lodes.

This Map is now available as an interactive CD-ROM titled "The Liskeard Mining Area 1863". Price £6 from the Bookshop, The Parade Liskeard, online and mail order.
