The dip of a lode from the vertical, Most shafts in Cornwall were sunk on the underlie, that is at an angle to follow the lode, only later ones were vertical. Dip is the angle measured from horizontal.
Underlie shaft  Shaft sunk at a slight angle following the course of the lode as opposed to vertical.
