South Caradon Mine

The view of  the yard

This scarred landscape is where the South Caradon Mine story started. It was from the valley floor here that the Clymo's dug the first tunnel into Caradon Hill.
The adit opened up onto the dressing shed floors, but the entrance has fallen in. Some dispute over its position exists, but It was probably in the position marked in the picture. Sump shaft was the site of the first engine on the mine. Originally powered by the waterwheel in the wheel pit and linked to it by flat-rods. The yard contained an assortment of workshops and stores needed to support the mining operations. The Chimney beside the yard served the miners dry.

On many mine sites in Cornwall dangers may still exist, many hidden.
