Dressing For Breakfast
A plain girl and her best friend try to survive the nineties while
trying to maintain relationships. But poor Louise, when her mother
isn't driving her nuts, can't find a boyfriend who isn't a complete
flake or already married. The second episode ends with a great scene
where the women decide, "All men are Daleks. Inside they have this
little creature controlling everything they do." You have to love a
series like this.

Dressing For Breakfast: Warner Sisters for Channel Four. 1995 Three
Stars
Likeable but not always very funny sitcom about a single girl in
her late 20s, played by Beattie Edney, and her boringly married best
friend (Holly Aird). Edney's character is typically unlucky in love
and overshadowed by her dominant, imperious mother, whilst suspicious
of her new Italian step-father, as she goes about trying to get a man
and similar sitcom fare.
Although not a classic, the show managed to break a little new
ground, in its generally uncontrived, unforced presentation of its
central character's life. It wasn't afraid to tackle the odd
controversial/risqué issue either, as with the episode that
focused on her gynaecological problems, and the pompous officious
gynaecologist who treated her and who always believed it was best not
to talk to the women about medical matters, because men tended to be
much more rational about it all. This brought about a rare
mother-daughter synergy as they united to scream their heads off at
him.
Although the writing was somewhat light on jokes, playing on
observation more than witty badinage, the characters in general were
likeable and/or memorable, and it offered a somewhat different
perspective from the usually male-dominated world of British sitcoms.
Also, it was a hell of a lot better than Life After Birth.
