Father Clifford arrives from England, transferred to a small Irish village. The first person he meets is Assumpta Fitzgerald, the local landlady, who seems to have a bad attitude towards the clergy. Already off to a poor start, he finds he also has to deal with the quirks of his congregation; like Niamh Quigley, who wants to know whether her boyfriend will make a good husband, and her father Brian who seems to think that a confessional complete with air conditioning and fax machine will make the world of difference in BallyK.
