HARBOR CLUB/SAME NIGHT
LORNA sits quietly at the table, not taking her eyes off the
picture HAYLEY'S given her for several seconds. Finally, she
looks over at Hayley, who's closing out the register and talking
to several of the waitstaff. As the waitstaff leaves, Hayley
closes the register drawer and walks over to Lorna.
HAYLEY
I'm done here. We can go.
LORNA
Wait just a minute, okay? Tell me, Hayley...do you remember any
of him as a little girl? Do you remember anything?
Hayley sits next to her and takes the picture.
HAYLEY
I remember what he used to call me....Princess Leelee. I don't
know why, but I remember he used to hold me on his lap, and sing
me a silly song he'd made up about Princess Leelee, who lived in
a giant castle on Leelee Lake.
LORNA
(smiling)
Leelee Lake?
HAYLEY
I guess he was big on alliteration. (She grins) I remember a
little of it.
LORNA
Can you sing it for me?
HAYLEY
Here? Now?
LORNA
Please?
HAYLEY
I'll sing what I can remember...(She begins to sing a childish
tune, in a slightly off-key voice). Princess Leelee had a castle,
down on Leelee Lake...and all the peasants loved her so, they
brought her milk and cake...with voice so soft and heart so true,
she never had a care...Princess Leelee of Leelee Lake, loved for
her raven hair....(she stops singing, ducking her head in
embarrassment)...I told you it was a silly song.
LORNA
(holding back tears)
It's a beautiful little song. It's something I can almost picture
him singing to you.
HAYLEY
Do you want to go now?
LORNA
(standing)
I guess we'd better.
They walk out of the restaurant, Hayley turning off the lights as
they go.
FADE OUT
OUTSIDE OF THE LUCKY LADY/SAME NIGHT
CHRIS is standing silently, his hands covering his face, his
shoulders shaking with silent sobs. JOE stands next to him,
helpless. Finally, Chris stops crying and looks up at Joe.
CHRIS
How can I tell them, Joe? How can I tell Etta Mae that her
daughter is dead?
JOE
I'll tell them, Chris. Toni was my officer, and she lost her life
doing her job. It's my duty to tell them.
CHRIS
(his voice deathly quiet)
I can't believe she's gone. We were getting married in a couple
of months.
JOE
(putting his arm on Chris' shoulder)
Come on. You should be with Toni's family at a time like this.
They open the door to the Lucky Lady and see ETTA MAE, KC,
TYRONE, and MARLEY sitting at a table. Etta Mae stands as they
enter, a smile across her face.
ETTA MAE
Hey, there, you two. Come to pick up some dinner?
Her smile quickly fades as she notices the seriousness on their
faces.
ETTA MAE(cont'd)
What's wrong?
JOE
Etta Mae...there's been an accident.
ETTA MAE
An accident? What kind of accident?
JOE
At Cory Publishing. With Toni.
ETTA MAE
(becoming more frantic)
My baby's been in an accident? Where is she? Is she at the
hospital?
JOE
(Holding Etta Mae's arms)
Etta Mae, she's not at the hospital. There was an explosion at
Cory. Toni had gone down to investigate...with Cameron. They were
both in Carl's office when the bomb exploded. Etta Mae, I'm so
sorry---
ETTA MAE
(cutting him off)
Don't tell me this, Joe...don't tell me this....(her voice grows
more and more pained)...I don't want to hear this!
JOE
I'm sorry, Etta Mae, KC. Toni didn't make it.
Etta Mae turns away from him, and KC reaches over to her.
Suddenly, Etta Mae clutches KC and a wail escapes her throat. She
begins to sob, loudly, the sound echoing through the Lucky Lady.
KC holds her tightly, her own tears streaming down her face.
KC
Mama, God, Mama, what are we going to do without her?
Tyrone stands from the table and holds both of them. Chris
watches helplessly, his own face streaked with tears. Etta Mae
lets go of KC and motions to Chris, who reaches out and hugs her,
both of them crying.
Joe motions to Marley, who stands and walks over to Tyrone,
clenching his hand.
JOE
You may want to get to the hospital. Vicky was at Cory, and she's
hurt. From what I understand, it's not life threatening, but
she's in the ER.
Marley looks at Tyrone, who leans forward and holds her to him
for a moment. Then he lets go, and nods at her, briefly.
Wordlessly, she lets her hand rest on his cheek, then leaves.
Joe stands back from the family mourning...his own heart breaking
for the loss of his friend.
FADE OUT
BCUH/SAME NIGHT
DONNA is standing outside of VICKY'S hospital room, pacing back
and forth. She looks up as Jake walks out.
DONNA
Is she all right? Is there a change?
JAKE
(shaking his head)
Dr. Doyle says that the babies seem stable for now...there
doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them. They're more worried
about the head injury and her losing consciousness. If she slips
into a coma, it could be dangerous for her and for the babies.
DONNA
Oh, God, not those two precious babies. Not after we've all
wanted them for so long.
JAKE
I will do everything I can to make sure that Vicky and those
babies are fine. I'll fly in doctors from all over the world if I
have to...nothing is going to happen to my children.
DONNA
(putting a hand on his face)
Victoria is lucky to have you, Jake. Now, can I go in and see
her?
JAKE
I think that's a good idea. She'd probably like to hear her
mother's voice right about now.
Donna walks into Vicky's room and approaches the bed. She picks
up Vicky's hand and sits next to her.
DONNA
Look at you...you're so beautiful. I thank God every day for
having brought you into my life. And I refuse to let you go, or
let go of those two babies you're carrying. I need you to wake
up, open those beautiful eyes, and fight for your twins. Just
like I fought so hard for you and Marley when I was pregnant. I
didn't know I was pregnant with twins, but I knew I had something
special inside of me. I knew you were going to have an impact on
me that I wasn't able to understand back then...and I was right.
You are a part of me, Victoria...right here...(she places Vicky's
hand over her own heart)...you and Marley, Steven and Kirkland,
and those two precious little girls inside of you. To lose one of
you would be like taking a piece of my heart out. And I refuse to
let that happen. I want to be sitting here in six months, holding
your twins in my arms, watching you with your children. And don't
you let me down on that...I've looked forward to it for too
long...
She leans over and kisses Vicky's cheek softly. As she sits,
holding her hand, we:
