HARBOR CLUB/SAME NIGHT
LORNA sits at a table close to the hostess stand, her hands on
her face. HAYLEY approaches her, quietly.
HAYLEY
This is exactly what I wanted to avoid. I didn't want to start
off like this with you.
LORNA
Look, I don't know what you want from me...
HAYLEY
I don't want anything from you! Please...just let me explain
everything, okay? I don't have the legal documents here with me,
but they're in my room at my boarding house. But please, just let
me explain to you why I came here, why I found out about you and
Felicia and why I've been searching for you.
LORNA
(coldly)
I'm listening.
Hayley sits down at the table next to her. She takes the picture
and stares at it for a minute, then begins to speak.
HAYLEY
I told you that my mother two years ago. I told you that we moved
around a lot when I was a kid. All of that was true. But what I
didn't tell you is that my name used to be Hayley Castigliano. My
mother's name was Ruth Shepard and when I was five, she changed
my name to Hayley Shepard.
LORNA
Why?
HAYLEY
I didn't know until a few months ago. I didn't know I used to be
Hayley Castigliano because who remembers things like that when
they're five years old? I was living in Baltimore, and a private
detective found me.
LORNA
I want to know how you were supposedly my father's daughter.
HAYLEY
(calmly)
I'm getting to that. When this detective found me, he told me
that he'd been working on this case since I was six years old.
Lucas had hired him to find me and my mother. So basically, all I
know, I learned from him. I knew my father's name from my mother,
and of course, it lists him on my birth certificate, and I have
this picture, but I couldn't have named any concrete facts. The
detective filled it all in for me. My mother always told me that
my father left us. She lied to me. I don't know why, but my whole
life, Mom wasn't always together. When I was eleven, she was
hospitalized for clinical depression and I was put into a foster
home. And the depression started much, much earlier, but she'd
finally gotten to the point where she couldn't function in the
real world anymore.
LORNA
She had this depression when you were little?
HAYLEY
(nodding)
She always had it. She had it when she and Lucas were together.
They were never married, but they were together. But when I was
five, she just packed me up and left. She didn't tell him where
we were going, she didn't tell him we were leaving. She just cut
off contact with him, changed my name to Hayley Shepard, and we
started our move around the country. He hired a detective to find
me. The detective looked for me and my mother, but she always
moved one step ahead of him, going by even more names, packing me
up in the middle of the night...after what the detective told me,
it seems my mother was even more ill than anyone thought. Then,
when I was seventeen...I got home one afternoon from school...I
opened the door to the apartment we were living in, in this dinky
little town in Pennsylvania, and I found my mom...she was lying
on the bathroom floor, her wrists slit open, and covered in her
own blood.
LORNA
(hand flying to cover her mouth)
Oh, my God....Hayley, I'm so sorry.
HAYLEY
(shrugs)
I've had a lot of time to deal with it. I called the police, told
them my mother was dead, and the next thing I knew, I was in
foster homes. I ran away when I was eighteen, and did what my mom
taught me...moved from town to town. Finally, this detective
caught up with me in Baltimore, a year after Mom killed herself.
He told me that my father had hired him to find me and when I
asked where my father was, I wanted to go see him...he told me
that he was dead. I don't know how to even describe the feeling I
had right then...I lost both of my parents in a year, one of whom
had been searching for me all this time and she kept me away from
him.
LORNA
If your....father...was dead, why did the detective keep up the
search?
HAYLEY
I asked him that. He said that he'd spent so much time looking
for me and he knew how much Lucas wanted to find me, that he'd
never forgive himself if he stopped the search. After all, I
still had family. We all deserved to get to know one another....
LORNA
Hayley, this is a pretty wild story...
HAYLEY
And I know that. You don't have to believe me, but I AM telling
you the truth.
They are both silent as we:
FADE OUT
CORY PUBLISHING/NIGHT
AMANDA and VICKY are still in the building, Vicky laying on the
floor, Amanda sitting next to her. Vicky opens her eyes.
VICKY
Amanda?
AMANDA
Yeah, it's me. The building's on fire.
Amanda tries to help Vicky up, but Vicky is in too much pain to
stand.
VICKY
(Grabbing her stomach).
Oh, no...
AMANDA
What's wrong? Vicky?
VICKY
(Obviously in pain)
The babies. Oh god, Amanda, the babies.
AMANDA
(Yelling)
Someone? Ok, Vicky, wait right here. I'm just going to see if
there's anyone down the hall.
VICKY
No, Amanda, don't leave. (Vicky closes her eyes again).
AMANDA
I won't, I won't, I promise. I'll just be one minute, okay?
Amanda walks over to door and sees smoke coming out from
underneath.
VICKY
(Semi-alert)
Amanda?
Amanda walks over to window and opens it. She sees the police and
firefighters and calls down to them.
AMANDA
Hello? Can anyone hear me?
AMANDA picks up her red jacket that is hanging on the chair and
waves the jacket out the window.
Cut to: Outside of Cory. Joe sees Amanda's jacket.
JOE
(Looking up)
What's this?
JOSIE
What is it?
AMANDA'S VOICE
Help!
JOE
It's Amanda!
Cut to: Amanda and Vicky. Amanda is still hanging out the window,
waving the coat.
AMANDA
Please help us! Somebody help us!
As she yells, we:

OUTSIDE OF CORY
JAKE runs up to JOE and JOSIE, CHRIS following.
JAKE
Joe, Joe, where's Vicky?
JOE
Jake, calm down. Vicky's still inside.
Jake runs towards the building, but Joe grabs his arms and stops
him.
JAKE
Let go of me, Joe!
JOE
Let the police and the firefighters handle it.
JAKE
My wife is in there!
JOE
And so is my sister-in-law and one of my best cops.
CHRIS
Joe?
JOE
Chris, I'm sorry. Toni's in there.
CHRIS
What?
CARL, RACHEL, and ALLI approach the others.
RACHEL
Joe, what's going on? Where's Amanda?
JOE
We saw her--she's still in the building, but they're getting both
her and Vicky out. They can't seem to get the fire under control,
so they're using a chopper and lowering the firemen in to get
her.
CARL
The radio reports are saying it was an explosion.
JOE
We don't know yet.
CARL
Whatever it was, it was meant for me.
Rachel looks at Carl in surprise.
Cut to: AMANDA and VICKY. Vicky is still on the floor in pain.
Her head is bleeding as well. Amanda rubs her head with a cloth.
AMANDA
(Tearing up)
Please, God, let Cameron and Toni be all right. Don't let them be
hurt...
A FIREFIGHTER is lowered down from helicopter. He pokes his head
in the window.
FIREFIGHTER
Okay, ladies, we're here to get you out.
AMANDA
Thank God!
FIREFIGHTER
We can only take you one at a time.
AMANDA
Get Vicky out first. She hit her head and she's pregnant.
VICKY
(semi-concious)
Amanda, you come too.
AMANDA
No, you go. They'll come back for me.
VICKY
No...Amanda...Amanda, wait.
AMANDA
Vicky, it's ok. I don't want to leave without Cameron. (To the
firefighter). Take her.
The firefighter picks Vicky up and carries her to the window,
strapping her to the safety mechanism. Amanda watches them leave,
then walks over to the door, slowly opening it and running into
the fire.
AMANDA
(Trying to see past the smoke and coughing)
Cameron? Cameron?
Cut to: Outside Cory. Joe, Jake, Josie, Chris, Alli, Carl, and
Rachel all watch as Vicky is being taken out of the building.
JOE
That's Vicky. Amanda must be next.
CHRIS
Where's Toni?
JOSIE
And Cameron?
Jake runs over as Vicky is lowered down. The firefighter goes
back to the window and hesitates. Amanda is nowhere in sight.
Cut to: Amanda is looking for Cameron. She is still coughing and
can barely breathe. She falls down, unconscious.
Cut to: Jake runs to Vicky's side. The paramedics put her on a
stretcher.
JAKE
Vick, Vick!
Vicky is still in enormous pain.
VICKY
Jake, the babies.
JAKE
What's wrong with the babies?
VICKY
(Crying)
I don't know. (She cranes her head around.) Amanda --
JAKE
What? What about Amanda?
Vicky loses conciousness, her head rolling to the side.
JAKE
Vick? Vick, stay with me!
Cut to: The firefighter finds Amanda on the floor and carries her
out as the other firefighters finally get the fire under control.
