Frequently Asked Questions

General Hitz / Wild Questions

(1)
When is Hitz/Wild going to get a license?
The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) will look
at the Melbourne & Sydney radio markets this year.

They'll then release a document called an "L.A.P."
for each metropolitan city, which will say how many
new community and commercial radio licenses should
become available.

The L.A.P. for the Sydney area was released in September 1999.
It includes plans to allocate 2 new commercial FM licenses
and 3 new community FM licenses!

And before you ask.. no decision has been made yet,
as to which groups/companies will receive any license.

To find out more about the Sydney L.A.P.,
read the ABA's press release

Once an L.A.P. is released for an area,
all groups who wish to have a license must go through
an application process to show why they deserve it.

For a more detailed explanation.. go to www.aba.gov.au

(2)
When is Hitz/Wild next on air?
See our sections:  Hitz dates or Wild (Syd & Bris) dates
(3)
When is the next Hitz or Wild CD out?
Both Wild (in Sydney & Brisbane) and Hitz
usually release CDs as they start a new broadcast.

Therefore - for new Hitz CD - see Hitz dates.
For a new Wild compilation: see Wild dates.

(4)
Can I be on the radio?
Sure!  (to an extent)
All community radio stations need volunteers,
from people answering request lines.. to management
commitees..
from promoters to announcers..
If you want to get involved with your favourite station,
just sign up as a member (see next question) and tell them
you'd like to help out.
(5)
What's with being a member?
I don't want to go on the radio!
As you can see above, being a volunteer isn't just for
announcers (DJs).
Being a member of a station like Hitz or Wild
helps YOU and THE STATION.

(1) You get a newsletter.. discounts at stores,
and you can help out at the station, and help decide
what the station should be doing.

(2) The station gets a little bit of money,
it also gets another member, so they can go to the ABA
and say "this many people think we should get a license",
and more volunteers means better stuff coming
out of your speakers!

(6)
How do I get an invite to an 'end of broadcast' party?
Good news.. you don't need one!
Just listen out for the date & location,
then turn up and party!  (Bring some friends)
(7)
Can I ever have a tour of the Wild/Hitz studios?
Can do.
Just call the station's office number (not request line)
and ask them when a good time would be to drop in.
(8)
Why doesn't Hitz/Wild play more (insert artist/group)?
I wish they'd stop playing (another artist/group)!
(1) Use the request line.
(2) Become a member and join the music department.

Raw FM Questions

(1)
Is the ABC making any more episodes of Raw FM?
What about another series?
When Raw FM was first discussed by the ABC..
they talked about making 26 episodes.. ie two series.

-But when they were about to start showing
the first series (13 episodes), it seemed to be a case of
"if it goes well, we'll make another series".

Unfortunately, the ABC is NOT making another series.

(2)
Is Raw just like Hitz?
Did someone fall off your roof/"come out" on-air/
hack into a bank/crash a truck/etc etc etc?
As you can see in the Episode Guide section of this site, there were some things that appeared in Raw FM that were similar to what happened at Hitz.

This is hardly surprising, considering the creators of the show employed researchers who interviewed lots of people in community radio.. (and spent heaps of time with Hitz staff, even coming to our nightclub OB's)

However, you've got to remember that Raw FM
was NOT a documentary.
Most of the story lines concern things that might have happenned at Hitz.

(3)
Why so much techno music on Raw FM?
You probably should be asking Ollie Olsen this...
but since you haven't, I'll try to guess...

Throughout the 80's and early 90's,
the stations that kids were likely to listen to in Melbourne were..

  • FOX FM (commercial) - Played Classic Rock eg Pink Floyd, Cold Chisel, etc
  • MMM (commercial) - Also Classic Rock
  • TTFM (commercial) - Soft Adult Contemporary eg Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, etc
  • Triple J (Government owned youth network)- played mostly 'alternative' music
During Hitz's first broadcast (Dec 1992)..
they played metal/alternative, top40 and dance.
(Lets not argue about labels though..
you know roughly what I mean..)

To put it simply, Hitz was playing music that other stations weren't. The commercial stations were aiming at listeners 25-39. (good advertising revenue) and Triple J played an extemely diverse range of songs,
but very few were Top 40, pop or dance.
Hitz didn't sound safe.. it sounded fun, and challenged you to guess what you'd hear next.. or what they'd say.

By the third broadcast however (Summer 93-94), Hitz FM seemed to be 5 minutes ahead of a big commercial dance/pop explosion. It was this broadcast that really put Hitz on the map, so as far as most people were concerned, this 'youth station' was just 'the dance station'.

I guess that Ollie must have been trying to format similarly 'challenging' music into Raw's music selection, in order to make it sound different enough to what you get on most radio radio stations.

(4)
Is really 'Actor X' gay/bi/straight/whatever?
As far as I know, all the actors in the series who played gay characters
in Raw FM are hetrosexual in real life.

Perhaps you can ask them yourself if you ever bump into them at a your local shopping centre.

(5)
Where can you buy the Raw FM CD?
Firstly, I don't work for the ABC.. and no I didn't get a free copy!

It's now hard to find the Raw CD. Most ABC shops (in Australia)
don't stock it.
Your local 2nd hand music store may be worth trying..
or leave a message in aus.music perhaps?

(6)
Have you met 'insert actor'?
Can you give them a message/get their autograph/etc etc?
Sadly, it's a big "no" to both questions.
I'll put up any fanmail addresses on this site if there's enough interest.
(Hey, if you're got an email/PO Box No. for one of the Raw FM 'stars', why not email it to me and everyone can say hello to them)
(7)
How many people at Hitz are like the ones in Raw?
Ooohh.. a few.. I think I could match about half the characters at Raw FM with people at Hitz.. but that's only my interpretation.
