RWHC Glossary

A Australian Broadcasting Authority (A.B.A.)-
Organisation in charge of radio and TV licenses.
Groups must prove their worthiness to get
(and keep) a broadcast license.

Amanda Douge- played Gerry in Raw FM.
An ex-law student who's appeared on stage, screen and TV,
including 'The Man from Snowy River (TV)'
with Joelene Crnogorac (Cara).

Aspirant broadcaster- A radio station that doesn't have a full-time license, but hopes to apply for one when there's a license available. Since Hitz FM's successful broadcasts, there have been a number of aspirants start in Melbourne, including Kiss FM- nightclub/rave culture, Joy FM- gay and lesbian & Kix FM- another youth station.

B B4- A fictitious Brit-pop group who visit Raw FM.
(similar in style to Take That or the U.S. Backstreet Boys)
C Cara Tomic- Sarah's quieter sister, who falls for Granger, breaks Curtis' heart and becomes Raw FM's ultra-efficient marketing guru.

Community Service Announcements (CSAs)
unpaid announcements on radio or tv for non-profit organisations.
Raw did them for safe sex, and Hitz has done them for the Scout Association, The Anti-Cancer Council, Very Special Kids, the Wilderness Society and many other organisations.

Computers- Are used extensively in Hitz FM, much more than was reflected on Raw.
(Although it wasn't like that in the early days of Hitz)
Currently, the music order is generated on computer, the production (sponsor announcements, sound FX etc) is done on computer, and the studio has one to play back promos, sponsorships, intros etc.

Conrad- The boss of Rok FM who sacks Granger in episode one of Raw, and later tries to poach Zelda in episode 12.

Contra- When you get something (not payment) in return for on-air promotion.
E.g. Raw FM contraed the use of the Chaddie Car Park in return for promoting the shopping centre on-air.
Almost every media (radio / tv / newspaper) does it, as it means you don't need cash for things...
BUT then you've given away airtime that someone could be paying for.. and you need to pay your bills.

Curtis- Had just spent a few years in Melbourne, after moving from the country.
Hears Raw FM and after a while, becomes the weatherman.
Falls for one of the Chaddie chicks, and then Cara.

D Dan Spielman- played Mark in Raw FM. He's into history, theatre and playing the blues.
Dan's deferred his Arts degree for the moment.

Dance Parties- Raw had one in a carpark, and Hitz FM has held them in halls, schools and riverboats to name a few.
They're an excellent way to promote the station, get new members and volunteers, give people a go at DJing, and much more.

Dominic Purcell- played Granger Hutton in Raw FM.
Grew up in Bondi.. being in Raw was a big break for him.
Since gone on to do Moby Dick with Gregory Peck,
and in late 1998 played a 'baddie' in Nine's Water Rats.

E Elena Mandalis- played Sarah on Raw FM.
She's appeared in a few movies, and won an AFI award for her performance in one of them.
F Fashion Parade- Raw held one in episode 12, and Hitz did one
near the end of broadcast 3.
It was held in an upmarket restaurant in the Melbourne suburb of Glenferrie, as a fundraising event.

Freedom of Speech- Sarah says its the most important thing in episode 5 of Raw, but it doesn't work that way.
When stations like Raw or Hitz are doing a test transmission,
they are bound by ABA regulations
in regards to racial vilification, offensive content, blasphemy and so-on.
If a station repeatedly breaks these rules, it's unlikely to get a full-time license.

G Granger- Thrown out of ultra-bloke radio station 'Rok FM' for his attitude
and drug problem, he sees the potential of a radio station run by young people.
He's also attracted to the young females in the station too.
Granger tries to make Raw sound as professional as it can, but is it still Raw then??

Gerry- A real internet addict. Lives in a room above Raw.
Discovers the outside of the closet with help from Sam.
She's there when Robert needs to release his concerns about the station and the people in it.

H Hitz FM- Melbourne Aspirant youth station that loosely inspired the story of Raw FM.
I Internet- Gerry in Raw was mad about it,
and so are a fair number of Hitz FM's staff
and listeners.

Hitz began it's website a few years ago.
It's been through a few facelifts...
but needs to be updated more often! :(
See our links page for more information.

J Jayse- A young asian guy who wants to start a radio station for kids
that they're actually in charge of.
His death in episode 1 of Raw gets Granger, Zelda and Robert thinking seriously about the idea.

Joelene Crnogorac- played Cara on Raw FM.
Previously appeared on Australian TV shows, including 'Ocean Girl' with Sudi de Winter (Curtis).
Now studying media arts, but may go on to journalism.

K It's the chemical symbol for potassium.. but I can't see how that's relevant.
L License, full-time- What Raw FM (& Hitz FM) are seeking.
They're handed out by the ABA when available, to groups that have proven that they provide for a need in the community,
and also that they're "fit" to have one.

License, temporary- Raw and Hitz both had them. It's a chance to get on-air for a bit, test your gear and staff, and prove to the ABA that you deserve a full-time license.
At the time of Hitz's big third broadcast, you could use 90 days in a year, any way you wanted.
Following Hitz's success, this was reduced to a maximum of 45 days in a row , and now 30 days at a time.
This means that it's much harder to let everyone know that you're on-air, because word-of-mouth takes a while.
NB This rule was changed again in early 1999.
Both the 2 Wild's and Hitz have held 45 day+ broadcasts
since then.

License, narrowcast- This gets complicated. Narrowcast licenses are for stations that
broadcast to a small, defined audience (either by the people or the area)
E.g. TAB (racing radio) or Grand Prix radio.
A narrowcast license is allowed to run ads like a commercial radio station.
Strangely, when you do a test transmission you're on a narrowcast,
but as your aiming to get a full community license, you run sponsorships instead.
[see sponsorships]

M Mark- His family's got his life planned out..
Private School.. University.. Lawyer..
but Mark's got other plans. He volunteers at Raw FM, doing a mid-dawn techno show.
He soon leaps out of the closet, and decides that MARK knows the direction that the station should be taking..

Matthew Dyktynski- played Robert in Raw FM.
A NIDA graduate who's been seen on stage and screen.
He was in the 1998 Aussie film "Road to Nhill".

N Nadine Garner- played Zelda in Raw FM.
One of the most well-known actors in the series.. she seems to have been on Australian TV's, stages and cinema screens for ever.
She's won a few awards for her performances too.
O Outside Broadcast (O.B.)- When a radio station broadcasts from a separate location to its studio.
Raw did this from a nightclub. When the station's on-air, Hitz FM usually does an O.B. every Friday and Saturday night from nightclubs.
They've also done O.B.s from cinemas and other venues.

Ollie Olsen- provided the original techno music for Raw FM.
Done lots of work in the Melbourne music scene.
Worked with Michael Hutchence as 'Max Q'..
releasing the single Way of the world in 1990.

P Parties- Raw held a couple, and Hitz FM has one to launch and end each broadcast.
The end-of-broadcast parties are usually pretty incredible,
as are their live broadcasts from a nightclub for New Year's eve.
Q Quit- Robert does this late in the series, and some characters are relieved when he returns in episode 12.
R Robert- The moral man of Raw. A music producer before the station started, he often questions Grangers commercial motivations. He is always the first person to stick up for someone who's being picked on, but even this doesn't help when the staff turn on him in episode 11.
His friendship with Zelda becomes a bit hotter near the end of the series.

Rok FM- The radio station that Granger previously worked for. When he was there.. he was a big star.. kids even had 'Granger Hutton' posters on their walls!!
[trivia] The setup of the Rok FM studio looks a lot like the studios of Triple M in Melbourne,
whilst the outdoor area shown in episode 1 (where Granger was sacked by Conrad) looks very similar to the balcony at the FOX/Triple M building.

S Sam- The loud and 'out there' lesbian who sees Raw as her ticket to her 'big break'.
She constantly whinges at the DJs to play her debut single, and then gets to do a performance for their first outside broadcast.
She encourages Gerry to leap out of the closet at last.
Sam sides with Mark later in the series and sees that she can also guide the station in the direction she believes it should be going..

Sarah- Cara's sister. She's the stuttering DJ who'll do and say anything on-air to provoke a reaction. She rebels against political correctness in episode 5, and discusses sex in episode 9.
She has a fling with Granger earlier in the series.
Sarah loves Techno in any way, shape or form.

Sophie Heathcote- Played Sam in Raw FM.
She's a NIDA graduate like Matthew, she's been in quite a few Aussie TV shows, and a couple of movies.
Her work with Ollie Olsen looks to be leading to a real career as a techno vocalist! (maybe)

Sponsorships- A public/community radio station can't just run ads
(in any quantity) like a commercial station.
Instead, they're limited to four minutes an hour of 'sponsorships'.
While you CAN play 30 second ads like the ones on commercial radio, they MUST be tagged with "A Raw FM sponsor" or something similar.

Sudi de Winter - played Curtis in Raw FM.
Appeared in a few TV shows, including 'Ocean Girl' with Joelene Crnogorac (Cara).
Thinking of pursuing a career in medicine rather than acting.

T Television - Some members of the Hitz FM staff did a series of Hitz TV on Melbourne's Community TV station 'channel 31' a few years ago.
It was a mixture of video clips, interviews, vox-pops and other silly bits. There has also been a Hitz FM show on Galaxy pay TV.

Twenty Five (25) - In the final episode of Raw FM, Mark bans anyone 25 or over from entering the building.

U University- Some Hitz volunteers have been recruited from uni's..
eg journalism And media students.. it's a good place for them to get experience.
V Vox-pops- When you go out in the street and interview people.
W Weather- Curtis' speciality.. growing up in the bush has taught him how to read what nature's up to.

Wild FM - Radio Stations in Sydney and Brisbane Australia.
The Sydney station was set up in 1996, and the Brisbane Wild FM
began in 1998.

X Xavier College- A prestigious school in Melbournes's inner eastern suburbs.
Hitz FM ran it's second test broadcast from a couple of classrooms there.

Xenophobia- Racism is an evil that Sarah fights on-air in episode 5. She decides that by letting people air their prejudices on-air, then people will see how silly they are.

Y Youth- The special energy that Raw and Hitz both depend on.
Z Zelda- the blind DJ who tries to volunteer for the radio station that reads newspapers for blind people, but they won't let her. She's one of the 3 characters who start up Raw FM.
She's great friends with Robert, and doesn't really trust Granger..
although they have a fling in episode 2.
She can't stand people who do special favours for her, just because she can't see.
