36th

Bomb Squadron

Mission

While at Lowry Field, Colorado, the squadron was in training.  Bombing missions were flown to train future bombardiers. Following the transfer to Alaska, the squadron's tactical mission prior to 7 December 1941 was limited to patrols along the Alaskan coast from Seward to point Barrow.  B-24, aircraft were used.
For the first six months of the war, the squadron's mission was execution of patrol and sea search missions.  The squadron used B-17  aircraft as well as B-24's until 12 February 1943, at which time all B-17's were replaced by B-24's.
Bombing missions and operations flights were flown in the Aleutian Islands, including attacks on Attu, Kiska, and Paramushiro Islands through the remainder of 1942 and 1943 until completion of landings by Army Ground forces on Kiska in August 1943.
