STATUS: Face. Tag team partners with Tanja, Warrior Woman. Feuding with Slam Dunk.
WRESTLING: Like so many of the WOW wrestlers, Roxy started off awful but has improved pretty rapidly. It seems like she can develop into a wrestler who is good on the fundamentals and utilizes her strength, although she will never be the one to do awe-inspiring spots.
CHARACTER: One thing you normally have to say about WOW is that it's very clear what the gimmicks are. I am still not sure what Roxy's is. When I first saw her, her "Superfly"-style intro music and her blaxploitation-like name (a la Foxy Brown, Cleopatra Jones, etc.) made me think that her gimmick alluded to that Pam Grier type of vibe. Although my theory seemed plausible at the time, it now seems like the allusions are unintentional, since Roxy is always (and the Rock means ALWAYS) referred to as the "Total Athlete." I guess that's what her gimmick is supposed to be, even though Slam Dunk is the "Superior Athlete" and Terri Gold is also supposed to be some sort of athletically oriented gal. Anyway, Roxy has spent little time on the mic, but has sounded darn good when she's on it. They obviously need to develop the character a little more.
LOOKS: Roxy is actually really good-looking. That body is TIGHT, and her face is cute too. The all-yellow suit is much more flattering to her than the old, dippy-looking green-and-yellow "Superfriends" reject job. The removal of the red streaks from her hair helps too.
COMMENTS: Most of WOW's faces are either super-goody-goody (Beckie the Farmer's Daughter, Terri Gold) or basically jobbers (the rest of them). So, in between her mic skills and her looks, there is definitely room for Roxy to excel as a face with a bit of a feisty attitude. She just needs to work on the wrestling, and get more of a push. I suspect that she will eventually beat Slam, which will help.
UPDATES:
2/11/01 (show #19):
- The feud with Slam Dunk continued, as Slam won a disputed match. They obviously
want the feud to keep going for a while, and they haven't exactly come up with
the most original ways to do it. I think it will nonetheless succeed in ultimately
getting Roxy over.
2/18/01 (show #20):
- A "strap match" with Slam was set up, resulting in Roxy having to
do a good amount of mic work. Her voice kept breaking, which didn't exactly
make her seem tough. Get her a powerful lozenge!
2/25/01 (show #21):
- Roxy beat Slam. Hopefully, the push continues, although no opponents leap
easily to mind. Maybe Riot, another tall wrestler with
good mic skills?
