Sassafras box with cherry lid made by well-known callmaker Albert Paul of Greenville, Mississippi
Steve Turpin box. Steve is the son of Hunter Turpin, grandson of Inman Turpin, and great (grand?) nephew of Tom Turpin. Tom and Inman Turpin were two of the early pioneers of box call making. The Turpin box looks a lot like the 'True Tone' box that used to be made by Penn's Woods. Tom and Inman Turpin worked together making turkey calls, but in 1956 Tom's turkey call portion of the business was sold to Roger Latham. Mr. Latham sold the Turpin name to Frank Piper of Penn's Woods in 1965. The block of wood in the picture has a hole in it for keeping a piece of chalk. The cork keeps the chalk from slipping out. The piece of wood rests in the call's sound chamber, and its top is contoured to fit the bottom of the call lid so that when it's strapped down with the velcro strap, it won't make noise while walking in the woods--Turpin's way of solving the age-old problem of keeping a box call quiet until you need it. This is a prototype "Mini" Lil Huzzy made by Tony Reynolds, from Roebuck, SC. Mr. Reynolds includes a rawhide loop as a silencing device. When calling, the rawhide loop is pulled down into the box. When the call needs to be silenced while walking or setting up, the loop holds the lid tight against the box and also prevents contact between the lid and the rails. Very clever! The rawhide also helps protect the edges from possible damage by the lid. Zebrawood call - with walnut lid and base - made by Craig Lariscy (Osceola Calls). Craig is from Lakeland, Florida. This call is made by Ed Vasek of Grandpa's Calls. It is a triple chamber box call made out of walnut with a pewter turkey emblem attached to the lid. Also has a shotgun shell brass inlaid in the handle. Ed also makes a hunting model version of this call. For more information contact Ed by by Email.
