A tsunami swept the coastal areas of nine South Asian countries surrounding the Indian Ocean yesterday, leaving tens of thousands dead, the United Nations said.

The giant wave triggered by an earthquake under the Indian Ocean devastated Indonesia and Sri Lanka the most. Thailand, India and Malaysia were also hit hard, the UN said.

Sources said the large number of people living along the coastlines and mostly relying on the tourism and fishing industries may result in a high death count.

UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon, speaking from his headquarters in New York, called for the support of the international community to rebuild the devastated areas. #
