Our History

Conceptualization for Fiction the magazine began in 2003. Eager to combat frauds perpetrated on non-professional writers, Bobbie-Lee Ozem sought a means to empower those targeted. After researching the issue it was determined that the most effective method of negating some of the most wide-spread "publishing scams" was to provide writers with a forum in which they could safely exhibit their works. For Ozem this solution was doubly satisfying; not only would she be combating the kinds of fraud which has become commonplace in some circles, she would also be helping writers pursue their dreams of becoming published.

In December of 2003, and with the assistance of Mercenary Writing Services, Fiction finally began to take form. After an intensive period of brainstorming, development, and market research, Fiction made its debut in the Geocities community in January, 2004.

"It's a momentous day," Ozem, editor-in-chief of Fiction stated. "Writers now have a place where they can get there work published without having to worry that it will be exploited or perverted."

While Fiction has finally found a home on the world wide web, the work is far from complete. In order to ensure its continued existence Fiction requires readers, sponsors, and, more importantly, submissions.

The magazine's premier issue is set for publication in March.

Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada - Online magazine is determined to protect writers from publishing scams.

Many people dream of becoming the next Stephen King or J.K. Rowling. For every one of these would-be Pulitzer Prize winners there is a con artist hoping to part them from their money. An entire industry has appeared claiming to "accommodate" writers; businesses that offer writers the opportunity to get published… if they are willing to pay. Some writers, desperate to see their works in print, believe these companies' promises of fame and fortune. No one understands this predicament better than the editor in chief of Fiction the magazine, Bobbie-Lee Ozem.

"Several years ago a family member became involved in one of these scams," Ozem relates. "That was my main impetus for becoming involved with this project. If Fiction can save even one person from losing money in these frauds it will all be worth it."

Fiction, set to launch March 1st, is a magazine that allows writers the opportunity to have their short stories, poetry, and book reviews published in a safe, reader-based forum. "It's hard to break into the publishing industry. Not everyone can be as lucky as J.K. Rowling," Ozem laughs. "Publishing companies and literary agents may not accept unsolicited manuscripts; some require that a writer already be published before their work will even be looked at. That's where we come in."

The magazine allows writers the opportunity to become published without having to worry that they will be taken advantage of. The Fiction website is temporarily being hosted by Geocities and can be found at http://ca.oocities.com/thefictionmagazine/.

The staff of Fiction are on a mission. They are fighting to give unpublished writers a voice.
