Description:
Adult males and adult females come in many breeds and sizes. The have breeds I raised are Golden Comets, Black Sexlinks, Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Reds Buff crosses. I currently have Buff Orpingtons, Silver Laced Wyandottes, White Leghorns, 1 Araucana and Barred Rocks.
I raise mostly brown egg layers. I started with raising Rhode Island Reds, but found that they are aggressive and dominate towards other breeds/ages of chickens. Rhode Island Reds are excellent egg layers, some well into their 4th year. The Golden Comets and Black Sex links on the other hand are extremely calm in comparison. Golden Comets and Black Sex links are good egg layers for the first year but their egg production rapidly drops off after that. In the spring of 2006 I purchased 6 Buff Orpingtons. They are still laying to this day. However being their second winter I am not getting an egg everyday, but it appears that I am getting one every other day. In the spring of 2007 I started raising Barred Rocks they have a wonderful personality. Barred Rocks have continued to be good egg layers through their first winter. During winter 2008 they have cut way back on production but there are several contributing factors that might be interfering with that I haven't had in the past due to the move. I also have two White Leg Horns. This is their first winter and they have continued laying, noticeable being the only two white egg layers. And during the summer I was getting 2 to 3 eggs a day out of them. I also have a rainbow layer that isn't laying during her first winter. All chickens could be being affected due to the move.
