Guinea Fowls are naturally from Africa. They
love to eat sunflowers and need only a small amount of water to
survive. During my last year of raising my guinea fowls I found
that they would drink about half the amount of water that the same
amount of chickens do. It is very hard to sex guinea fowls. The
only sure way is to listen to the song they sing. Males sing chick,
chick. Females sing cum-quant. However females if they are scared
will also sing chick, chick. Guinea hens lay eggs for about 3 to
4 months each summer to early fall. The egg is like a small chicken
egg and is tear drop shaped (Egg
Picture). Guinea Fowls are usually raised for there dark meat.
The meat guinea is known as the french guinea or "The Roaster
Guinea." The Roaster Guinea is ready for the table in 10 weeks
and is larger then a standard guinea fowl. I have found that they
make great "watch dogs." If an animal comes anywhere near
there home they make lots of noise and you know there's something
there, not to mention that they seem to scare the animal away. I
currently have my guinea hen in with my chickens. She holds her
own ground with the other birds. Guinea Fowls do tend to wonder
if let to run loose, so I suggest keeping them in an inclosed pen
with a roof. They are very good fliers. Guinea Fowls are like many
other birds and like to look at themself in a mirror. And will spend
all day grooming themself in a mirror if they have one.
