Some Year 10 pupils have been involved in specialist masterclasses at local universities. Pupils from Mortimer, Brinkburn and St Wilfrid's participating in Science Masterclasses The aim was to enjoy different aspects of the subjects and to improve pupils' chances of attaining high grades at GCSE. Subjects covered include: Maths, Music, Citizenship, Biology, Chemistry, History, Art, French. Here is some of the work created by our talented art students: Here are some comments from the pupils involved: I
participated in the first session of a music course at Newcastle University on
Saturday morning. Being in a lecture theatre full of other musicians that I
didn’t know was daunting but I
wasn’t allowed to let that get in the way. We worked in groups, composing
short melodies in modal keys with two people whose instruments were compatible
with our own…I’ve never played with an electric guitar and a tenor horn
before! It was fun looking at elements of music from other instrumentalists’
points of view. Later,
after a brief introduction to jazz chords and harmonies we were given the chance
to improvise on a fragment by one of the lecturers. That was really interesting
as I’ve always loved improvising. I learnt a lot from those three hours. It
helped my social skills as well as my musical skills. I’m looking forward to
next week. (Ruth Arkley) On
Saturday I was a bit nervous attending the Chemistry masterclass but it was an
exciting experience and I really enjoyed it. We learned about the Moles Concept
and there were some interesting experiments. I’m sure I shall benefit from
this experience and I also found it very interesting to look round Northumbria
University. (Louise
Thompson) I
really enjoyed the experience of the Maths masterclass as the lecturers were
very friendly and helpful. We used napious
rods and looked at Genaille and Lucas’ theory. These are different ways of
multiplying which I will be able to use in class. It was a good experience and I
made some new friends from other schools. (Catherine
