Our school mission statement states that every child has God-given talents and we aim to develop those talents to their fullest potential.

There are a number of activities taking place in St Wilfrid's school for pupils with special gifts and talents.

Here are the pupils from our school who took part in the Masterclasses at Northumbria and Newcastle Universities earlier in the year.

Ten pupils aged between 11 and 13 attended a poetry seminar at Newcastle University delivered by Professor Desmond Graham. The theme of the session was "Strange Creatures".

Ten of our talented GCSE Linguists  attended  a specialist language course, La France en Direct, in Newcastle.

Our Year 9 pupils are currently working on a new school magazine. The first issue was published in May. This focused on achievement and learning and contained logic puzzles and competitions as well as links to websites which may be of use to students. We hope to make the next issue available online...watch this space.

80 pupils were involved in a Sponsored Mastermind competition to raise funds for St Cuthbert's Care. Logic, lateral thinking and working under pressure were key skills. The top scorer was Tim Banks in Year 10.

A number of our students are celebrating their recent success in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge. Ruth Arkley and Ben Dawson, both Year 9 students, and Neil Jackson (Year 10) received Bronze awards. Gemma Brunton, Catherine Thorniley and Abigail Alderson (Year 10) received Silver Awards. Timothy Banks,a Year 10 student, was named "Best in School", winning a Gold award and the chance to progress to the next stage of the competition. We wish him luck. Many of our Year 7 and 8 pupils have also been successful in the UK Junior Maths Challenge. We should particularly mention Terry Gribben, Matthew Jordan and Jessica Hall who achieved Gold awards. We look forward to seeing their picture in the local newspaper.

Our Summer School took place in the first two weeks of the summer holiday. Twenty pupils from our feeder primary schools joined some of our current Year 7 pupils for a wide variety of activities. The theme of the Summer School was "Superhuman" and involved Maths, Science, Design & Technology, Spirituality and ICT. Pupils also visited the National Glass Centre in Sunderland and Life Interactive World in Newcastle. Pupils participated in a variety of physical activities too: archery, trampolining and tennis.
