His father Evan wrote in his memoirs: "In February, 1876 we moved [to the Bethel property] ...the house was of logs and had been built at least 40 years by the looks of the place. There was one room below and the loft, the roof being covered with slabs or home-made shingles laid on bare poles for refters and you could see thru them anywhere. I partitioned off one corner of the house for a bedroomwith pieces of rag carpet on the floor. Our furniture was poor and today would bring practically nothing .....to this place I brought my bride of a year with our few weeks old baby....." A.W. farmed the home-farm with his father until age 22, when he rented a tract of land nearby in Post twp. Swenson, Esq. and the bride is a daughter of Geo. W. Harris. Both families have been long and favorably known in this community and all hope heaven's choicest blessings may rest upon the happy couple all through the journey of life." and "Yesterday was a beautiful Thanksgiving day. Although the mercury registered 6 below in the morning, the day was mild and pleasant..." Witnesses to their marriage were W.M. Harris and Maria Dresser. Arthur and Nina celebrated many wedding anniversaries. Excerpts from the Postville Herald, 1948: "Wednesday, November 24, marked a gala event at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Swenson when they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. In honor of the occasion, dinner, at noon, was served at their home to 40 guests, some of whom attended the couples wedding 50 years ago......Following the dinner, open house was held and refreshments served to some 150 relatives, old friends and neighbors. Many beautiful bouquets decorated the home and a three-tiered wedding cake made a most attractive centerpiece......They have spent their entire lifetime in this community. Following their marriage, they rented a farm in Ludlow twp. This was their home for several months. In the yera 1900 they purchased the farm seven miles east of Postville on which they have lived for the last 48 years....." They were to celebrate 16 more anniversaries together. A.
