Kuala Lumpur The Heartbeat of the Nation

Introduction

Kuala Lumpur came into being in the late 1860's as an unruly shanty town built on the confluence ofSultan Abdul Samad Building two rivers, the Kelang and the Gombak. Originally populated with warring Chinese tin miners, the town rapidly grew to become the state capital of Selangor, and then became a Federal Territory and the capital of Malaysia.

Commonly referred to as K.L.. The city has become modern and prosperous whilst retaining a colourful blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Arab and European cultural influences. Most of K.L.'s impressive landmarks were constructed at the turn of the century and include many places of worship for the various Muslim, Hindu, Chinese and Christian communities living in the city. Now there are some modern skyscrapers like the Petronas Twin Towers which is the World Tallest Tower.

Kuala Lumpur is the country's liveliest shopping and entertainment center, with air-conditioned shopping malls and plazas scattered around the city. Evening entertainment can be found in pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants. Photo : The Sultan Abdul Samad building completed in 1879 was the first major building to be erected in Kuala Lumpur. Formerly known as the State Secretariat, it was the seat of the British administration until the Federation of Malay was formed in 1957.
