Introduction
Perlis is the northern most and smallest state on the Peninsular
of Malaysia. It borders Thailand to the north, Kedah to the south
and the Andaman sea to the west. Once part of the Kedah Sultanate,
Perlis became a separate state after the Siamese occupation in 1821,
and later came under British control in 1909. After the Second World
War it joined the Malayan Union and
eventually the Federation of Malaya.
The state capital is Kangar, a small quiet town nestled amongst
a never-ending sea of paddy-fields. A few kilometers north of the
town lies Batu Pahat, the site of snake farm, golf course and recreational
center. To the east of the state, the royal town of Arau encompasses
the Sultan's palace and royal mosque.
Near the Thai border, Padang Besar holds a colourful duty free
market. Along the coast, the quaint fishing port of Kuala Perlis
is the departure point for ferries carrying visitors to the tranquil
Langkawi Islands. Photo: A Malaysian fishing
