Of remote origins, 'Fado' means fate translated into music. It's "Fatum", the certainty of existence itself, of suffering or happiness that are life's driving force. It is not always sad, noble or popular. Written in free four line stanzas, based on a story or passion, or simply putting a poem to song, accompanied by the 12-string Portuguese guitar and the classic guitar, it certainly portrays a state of the soul. In the 'Fado' of Coimbra, sung by students wrapped in black capes, one can hear the troubadour origins whereas the 'Fado' of Lisbon has a more audacious tone of despair. 'Fado' can be heard not only in the twilight of the more typical neighborhoods of Lisbon, such as Alfama or Bairro Alto, but also in many other parts of the country. |

Impossible to put into words, the 'fado' is not only felt by those who sing it or understand its meaning. Even if you don't understand or speak the language, you'll be drawn by the melody and voice.
