BOSTON BRUINS Page
11-28-99: L2-1: at Boston
The Bruins were unable to score a critical goal in the third
period as they kept the New York Islanders on their heels for the
final 20 minutes. Rookie goalie Roberto Luongo (drafted 4th
overall in 1998,) obtained a win in his NHL debut. He made 43
saves to give the Isalnders the win. The Islanders only got 20
shots on goal, but they scored twice which was enough to beat the
Bruins. Dafoe did let in a wrap-around goal from Zdeno Charra,
due to a breakdown of defense (Samsonov was left to cover him 1
on 1...) however Dafoe was unable to recover his positioning in
time. The Bruins next game is in Washington vs. the Capitals, who
beat the Bruins 3-0 in their last meeting.
11-26-99: T 2-2: at Boston
Boston bailed out of a 2-0 hole and earned a tie with the
Vancouver Canucks. Goals came from Jason Allison (powerplay) and
Steve Heinze. The overtime period was all Bruins, who managed 3
shots during a powerplay in the sudden-death period. Garth Snow
managed 35 saves for the Canucks, who are 2-0-2 in their last
four games against the Bruins (1-0-2 in Boston.) The Bruins are
now 11-2-2 since their 0-5-4 start this season.
11-24-99: W 5-2: at Nashville,
Tennessee
Boston again fell behind 1-0, but rallied with 4 goals in the
second period, on goals from Ray Bourque, Dave Andreychuk, Sergei
Samsonov, and Mikko Eloranta. A mod third period goal came form
Newcomer Joe Holbig off an assist from Joe Thornton. It seems
that the Bruins have regained the stature that they enjoyed last
year. The B's have gotten scoring from 3 different lines on a
regular basis this season. Boston is an enjoyable team to watch
these days, and their performance lately shows that they are
shaping up to be legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. 8 of their
next 13 games are home stands. The Bruins are now in third place
in the Eastern conference, 1 point behind co-Conference-leaders
Toronto and Philadelphia.Boston now has 27 points.
11-22-99: W 2-1: at Raleigh, North
Carolina
The Bruins fell behind early in the game on a goal by Martin
Gelanas, but rebounded with goals from Jason Allison and Dave
Andreychuk. Carolina played their system well, but the Bruins
found ways around the defensive strategy and capitalized on the
mistakes of the Carolina defense. Mattias Timander left the game
with a shoulder injury, and Hal Gill had to leave to get stiches
for a cut. Joe Thornton did not play due to a sore knee. Gill
returned, however Timander did not. This is the Bruins 10th win
out of 22 contests this season. Raymond Bourque had to play
yeoman minutes (around 32) than usual along with Don Sweeney and
Darren Van Impe (due to injuries.)
11-20-99: L 3-0: at Boston
Boston played a lackluster game, with injuries to Kyle
McLaren, Joe Murphy, Rob DiMaio, and Ken Belanger nagging the
Bruins. This was the second game this season that Boston falied
to get a goal. The Capitals defense played solid, and did not
allow Boston any liberties with the puck . The Bruins were not
skating, looking tired and uninterested, and nothing was working
against Washington. The Capitals got one goal from Petr Bondra
and two goals from Andrei Nikolishin. One of Nikolishin's goals
was shorthanded, and the other was an empty net goal. Byron Dafoe
played between the pipes for the Bruins, and Craig Billington
played net for Washington. Billington got his 8th career shutout,
and 100th career win.
11-18-99: W 5-3: at Boston
Boston continued their winning ways when they beat the New
York Rangers for the second time in three games. The Bruins held
a 4-0 lead early in the third period, but the Rangers were able
to score 3 goals and keep it close, until Joe Thornton scored and
empty net goal at the whistle. Dafoe looked sharp early, but let
three quick goals in the third. Burns will be angry at the way
the Bruins let the Rangers back into the game, and it is a little
unsettling to know that they did not clamp down on the 4 goal
lead.
11-17-99: T 2-2: at New Jersey
The Bruins erased a 2 goal deficit to end up with a tie
against the New Jersey Devils. Rob Tallas was in net for the B's
(Brodeur played goal for the Devils.) A fluke goal from the Devil's
Scott Gomez gave the Devils a 1-0 lead early in the first period,
with another goal coming on the powerplay from Sergei Brylin in
the second period. The third period the Bruins got scoring from
Mikka Eloranta on the powerplay, and a fluke goal from newcomer
Joe Murphy. The Bruins seem to be gaining a knack for making
games interesting. Tomorrow night the Bruins face the Rangers at
the Fleet Center, who should be looking for redemption for
themselves and their coach for the 5-2 routing that the Bruins
dished on them last Saturday. While abysmal at home, the Rangers
are a .500 club away from N.Y.C.
11-13-99: W 5-2: at New York
Another strong game gives the Boston Bruins their eigth win
of the year, moving them 2 games above .500 for the first time
this season. Anson Carter had a career game with four points (2
goal, 2 assists.) Dafoe was tested early and played well, however
Lord Byron did let two by late in the game (the 2nd Rangers goal
was scored with one second left in the third period.) P.J.
Axellson also had a good game. 3 of the Bruins goals came off of
one-timers, as the Ranger still search for line chemistry between
their $60 million dollars-worth of players. Dafoe had 27 saves.
No points for Allison or Andreychuk tonight.
11-11-99: W 4-3 (OT): at Boston
Boston extended a streak to seven consecutive home wins with
a victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Bruins won in
overtime on a goal from P.J. Axellson. Dave Andreychuk had two
goals bringing him tied with the league lead with 13 overall.
Dafoe was in net for the Bruins, who now seem to be carrying the
same tempo that they had last season. Curtis Joseph, who had a
shutout against Boston in their first match of the season, was
taken by surprise by Axellson's shot in overtime to win the game
(a tight backhand shot over CuJo's glove.) Burns again was
displeased with his teams performance, but was happy with the win.
11-10-99: L 6-2: at Buffalo
Boston lost their first game in seven outings to the
streaking Buffalo Sabres. The Bruins never really came back from
a 4-0 deficit. Goalie Byron Dafoe was pulled midway through the
second period after giving up 4 goals on 20 shots. Tallas
replaced him, and gave up 2 more. Buffalo played a very physical
game, and the Bruins never got into scoring position until the
third period. It was a disappointing effort as viewed by B's
coach Pat Burns, who said "It was not our type of hockey."
Bruins goals were scored by Thornton and Heinze.
11-06-99: W 4-2: at Boston
Boston has now won 6 in a row, this win being the first with
Byron Dafoe in net. He played well, Pat Burns was pleased, and
Andreychuk is now tied for the league lead in goals with 11.
Andreychuk scored two goals against Atlanta, and it seems that
the Bruins are the hottest team in the NHL right now.
11-04-99: W 3-1: at Boston
The Bruins extended their winning streak to 5 games, their
longest since December of 1997, with a strong performance by
rookie goalie John Grahame. 30 saves the youngster made, and
looked sharp. The Devils only goal cam from rookie Scott Gomez,
and the Bruins had goals from Darren Van Impe, Steve Heinze, and
Mikko Eloranta (empty net.) One note: Grahames save percentage is
now .939. One other thing: this is the Bruins first win this
season after letting up the first goal.

News from November
11-29-99
Joe Murphy and Kyle McLaren are both skating in practices.
McLaren has a spraigned thumb, and Murphy is out with a spraigned
knee. They should be back soon. Boston is 11-2-2 since going 0-5-4
to start the season. Joe Thornton leads the Bruins with 22 points,
Anson Carter is slightly behind him with 19...Dave Andreychuk has
15 goals...Bourque is only 8 points behind 9th place all-time
points for a defenseman (Paul Coffey.)
11-24-99
Defenseman Mattias Timander suffered a shoulder seperation in
Monday's game versus the Hurricanes and will be out 3-weeks to a
month, possibly more. The previous game against Carolina (11-22-99)
featured a Bruins team that was missing 7 regular players, and to
come out with a win says something about the team's intensity and
effort. Joe Thornton will play tonight after missing the Carolina
game with a sore knee.
11-20-99
The Bruins have been able to stay reasonably healthy for the
early part of the season, however injuries have started to take
man-games away from the Bruins. Ken Belanger is suffering from
severe post-concussion syndrome, Rob DiMaio has a broken foot
which was misdiagnosed as a spraign ealrier and should miss 2-3
weeks. Landon Wilson has a shoulder injury, but is expected to
return soon*. And during the Rangers game on the 18th of November,
Kyle McLaren suffered a spraigned thumb and will miss at least
two games, and Joe Murphy has a leg injury and is expected to
miss 2-3 weeks as well. Jonathan Girard, a rookie defensman has
been playing as a winger for a few games, but has had to move
back to take McLaren's place at the blue line.Three players from
the Providence Bruins have been called up as well to cover the
forwards who have been injured in recent games, Joe Hulbig, Andre
Savage, and Jeff Zehr. They play together on the fourth line, and
have looked good in their game against the Washington Capitals.
It will be interesting to see how the Boston Bruins handle this
gut-check 20+ games into the season...
*(11-22-99: Langdon Wilson was in tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes, so he is back. However, Mattias Timander left with a shoulder injury, Joe Thornton missed the game due to a sore knee, and Hal Gill left the game briefly to take stitches for a cut on his forearm.)
11-13-99
The Bruins signed winger Joe Murphy yesterday, who was skating
with the New York Rangers earlier in the week. He is a strong
forward who will most likely see action with the Thornton
Samsonov combination. A one year deal, Murphy was a free agent.
