Ah, at last your Pokémon journey begins. You start in tiny Pallet Town after you name yourself and your rival. Before you do anything, though, quickly check out the computer in your bedroom and look at "Withdraw Item." Quickly take out the Potion, which heals 20 damage off your soon-coming Pokémon. Walk out the building and head towards the grassy spot on the top of the town. An old man, Professor Oak, will stop you and escort you to his lab. In the Yellow Version, you'll obtain a Pikachu that Oak had just stopped from harming you (by capturing it). In the Red/Blue versions, you'll have to make a choice: Which do you prefer, the plant-type Bulbasaur, the water-type Squirtle, or the fire-type Charmander? Charmander, although the coolest looking, is the worst choice. There's tons of Rock-and-Ground Pokémon early on and that's what Charmander is terribly weak to. The second Pokémon Gym is also devoted to water-types, which makes this guy weak. And truthfully, it's very weak all by itself, having few advantages and many weaknesses. Bulbasaur has it easy, but it is part Poison type, a weak type, and it isn't too fast. I prefer Squirtle. It can learn Ice & Water attacks to make it strong against 6 different types. For Charmander, however, if you have a different game, you can temporarily trade the littl' bugger off to a different file, where someone has a ton of cash. They can buy a TM 27, Dragon Rage, for you at the Team Rocket prize corner. This attack does 40 damage regardless to anything about the opponent. You should ditch it later on, when 40 damage is a scratch, but it will do a rookie Charmander a world of good! Trade it back and your worries are OVER! The second you get your Pokémon, your rival will challenge you to a battle with a leftover Pokémon that is an Eevee in Yellow, or strong to your type in the Red/Blue versions. He'll have Charmander, a Fire type, if you choose Bulbasaur, Squirtle, a Water type, if you chose Charmander, and Bulbasaur, a Grass- and- Poison-type is you chose Squirtle. Tackle, Scratch, or Thundershock your way to victory and don't use any other attacks. If your monster's energy is low use a Potion. Win this at all costs, literally- if you lose to any trainer, like your rival, your money will be depleted by half, and your Pokémon will miss out on leveling up. But even worse- if your rival wins against you in Yellow, his Eevee will eventually evolve into a powerhouse Vaporeon! It's very strong, and it's best to get a different, weaker evolution later. Once you emerge triumphant, go back to your house and talk to Mom, who will heal your Pokémon's wounds. On to Route One! Talk to the guy waddling around and he'll give you another Potion. Sweet! Run from all the Rattatas and Pidgeys you find in the long grass, as you cannot buy Poké Balls this early so you can capture them. In the next town, Viridian City, search all the buildings and talk to all the people to get important information. In one house, labeled "MART," you should go inside and talk to the guy at the counter. He'll give you an item that you'll bring to Oak back in Pallet. Go to the place labeled "POKE" in the town and talk to the lady behind the counter. You'll find tons of places like this. She'll heal your Pokémon for FREE! There's also a helpful PC and a person that operates the trading center. This Trading Center is very useful, and as I'll mention later you can get powerful Pokémon from different files. You may want to fool around with this early in the game if you dislike your Pokémon that you currently have or want to temporarily trade it away to give it better attacks early on. (Like a Squirtle equipped with Surf, Ice Beam, Dig, Body Slam, etc…) A warning, though: Don't trade any Pokémon that are above level 19! They'll disobey you until you earn badges from Gym Leaders that allow you to control 'em, such as the Rainbow Badge will have all Pokémon at level 1-50 obey you, etc…although, beware, even if they are at the correct level, they still might disobey you, use a different attack, hit themselves in confusion, yadda yadda yadda. Now head back to Pallet Town and talk to Oak. You'll receive a Poké Dex, which gives data on Pokémon that you have caught/seen, such as weight, nickname, descriptions, sound, and location. Go to your rival's house and talk to your rival's sister. She's a lot nicer than he is, and will give you a Town Map. This item will show you all the routes, cities and such. Talk to your Mom if your Pokémon got wounded on the way and go back to Viridian City. Heal up at the Center and stop at the store again. You can buy Poké Balls to catch Pokémon with! They cost $200, and should buy 7 for now. You should buy more whenever you have about 2 left. First head to Route 1, and attempt to catch a Pidgey or Rattata. Pidgey is a Flying/Normal type, and Rattata is a Normal type. Bring down their energy to red, then throw a Poké Ball. Be sure not to faint your capturee, as they won't be able to be captured at all- a fainted Pokémon will simply give you experience points. The ball will probably catch it. They will join your team. Go back & heal up. Did you ever notice that, going in this direction in Viridian (ß) or left, you'll encounter a new area? It's mostly a bush, but in the Yellow Version, never go above it to the little plateau. Your rival, with his Eevee and Spearow, show up. They're easy to beat with level 7 Pokémon, but if you do defeat him, Eevee will evolve into Jolteon, with Speed rivaled only by Mewtwo, Aerodactyl, & Electrode! If you don't challenge him, it'll evolve into a Flareon. Though no Magikarp, it's terribly weak compared to Jolteon/Vaporeon! In Red/Blue, feel free to teach your loser rival a lesson and send him crying home for mommy. Watch out, though- If you started with Charmander, I sincerely hope you traded it to a different file to give it Dragon Rage (don't forget to get it back!) Make sure to catch the male and female Nidoran (Poison type, a weak type, but who cares?) in this bush, and though it might take a while, a Spearow (Normal/Flying) will undoubtedly aid you on your quest. In Yellow, though, look for a Mankey. (Fighting type) They are quite advanced Pokémon for you early in your Pokémon journey. Catch Of the Day: Pidgey, Rattata, Nidoran female & male, Spearow, & Mankey.* (*Yellow Version only) If you traded your Squirtle temporarily to a different file & taught it the skill Surf, you'll have this battle easy. Surf is the 2nd most powerful water attack, and because it is taught by HM3, there's no worry about only having only one per game- you can use HMs over and over again. An Alakazam's high special will take care of them and a Bulbasaur's Vine Whip works well. A Dratini can also be taught Surf. A Charmander or Growlithe equipped with Dragon Rage will wipe them out quickly. A Butterfree's Confusion makes their low Special show. If you bring the wrong types, kiss your victory goodbye, but if you know what to bring, you'll easily claim the Boulder Badge, which allows you to use FLASH, another HM. Its also called HM5. Since you claimed victory, you can go to Route 3- that annoying kid isn't there to bother you any more.
