The Writing's On The Wall© Paul O'Keefe 1997The writing's on the wall. Throughout history people wanted to leave behind their mark on the world. They wanted to leave us their stories and legends, their hopes and dreams, their ranting and revelations. Holy books, self-improvement books, propaganda, computer manuals, epic poems, sci-fi, gothic, pornography, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Some are written to aid and help humanity. They try to tear down our barriers, to free us, to expose us. However, in battering walls they often resurrect thicker, higher, stronger walls. Other messages are aimed at repressing mankind and controlling us, but it is these same ideas which cause us to revolt, to act, to attack the walls. More specifically the writing is not on the wall, as much as it is part of the wall. That's its strength. Today, we live in a world of information. The TV, the magazines, the books, papers, and CDs; all contain the writing on the wall. Their messages vary drastically like night and day. Therefore, right and wrong, truth and fiction are no longer objective, if indeed they ever were. Everything is subjective. The internet, this homepage, this paragragh, this sentence; all subjective, all open to interpretation. Is this education? Does this open your eyes, make you think? Make you hate? Is it propaganda or is it art? Did you notice I changed point of view midway through the paragragh? Do you care? Do I have a point? This page is beautiful. Close your eyes. This page is ugliness. Open your eyes. The truth is ugly. Beauty is the essence of truth. Deep, or shallow and self-serving? You are the judge. You are the judge, jury, and executioner. We are the guilty party. Judge us. It's your choice. It's not your choice. We are in control. I am in control. Am I in control? This is my message, my contribution towards comtemporary eternity. The writing's on the wall: read it, ignore it, deface it. Write your own and forget it. Notice: This piece of writing may not be within everyone's tastes. Contents under pressure. Do not pucture or incinerate.
