Adventure / Colossal Cave Introduction

About 25 years ago William and Patricia Crowther explored and mapped parts of the Mammoth and Flint Ridge cave systems in Kentucky. He then wrote a FORTRAN simulation, which was developed further by Don Woods and translated into C by Jim Gillogly. He and Walt Bilofsky developed the program for PCs. Other development work was done by J.R. Jaeger, Jerry D. Pohl, John W. Kennedy and others.
There are 370 and 550 point versions, but this walkthrough is based on AdventF.zip, a 350 point version for OS/2 by Martin Heller available from Hobbes. Advos2.zip, another OS/2 version, is buggy.

The object of the game is to get into the Colossal Cave, and out again alive with as many treasures as you can. You will get a small increase in score when you get the treasure, and a larger increase when you take the treasure to the Building found at the beginning of the game.
The computer can understand and obey a rather limited range of two word commands. One can move by entering n,s,e,w,u,or d for north, south etc, and sometimes ne, se, nw, sw. But remember that going e.g. north into an area does not necessarily mean that going south from that area will get you back to the first area. I'm not sure whether this is a bug or a feature, but it can be horribly confusing at times. Also, going in some directions, e.g. down a hole, makes it impossible to go back the way one came.
If in doubt save the game. One can do so at any time by typing save. The program will ask for a name under which to save the game, and will save it with the .adv suffix. So far as I know one can save any number of games. One restarts the game from the command line by typing advent -r, and is then prompted for the name of the game to be restored.
I found it helpful to type Look in each area of the cave, since sometimes not everything is shown the first time. One can only carry 7 or so things at a time, so it is necessary to take treasures back to the Building from time to time.

Sometime during the game an angry Dwarf will appear and throw an at you. Get the axe to throw back at the other six Dwarves.
A Pirate may appear and steal all the treasures you have with you. To get full points one must find the Pirate's Chest (which is itself a treasure) and take it back to the Building.
