My Forgotten Realms books
1.Forgotten Realms -Campaign Setting boxed set
This is essential for running a campaign in the Forgotten Realms. It has information on most of the areas of Faerun, the power groups of Faerun, the Gods, information on select NPCs, and much more. If you don't have it, get it.
2.Elminster's Ecologies
In the guise of Elminster and his friends the authors of this boxed set spend a little too much time telling stories, rather than giving hard information to use in your games. It is quite entertaining though, so I have to give them some credit.
3.Spellbound(Thay, Aglarond, and Rashemen)
This kicks ass. It might just be because I love Thay that I say that. If you want to add some sinister evil to your campaign I suggest this boxed set. It has thorough information on the realms of Thay, Rashemen, and Aglarond. There is so much stuff in here that it will keep you going for a long, long time.
4.City of Splendors(Waterdeep)
Once again, a great boxed set. All you want to know about Waterdeep. However, if you are like me and DM like a history teacher, it may be a bit hard to keep track or remember all of the stuff in here. But hey, thats what we love right; more information than we could ever keep track of. Thats what makes the Realms so great.
5.Lands of Intrigue(Amn, and Tethyr)
The realms of Amn and Tethyr are detailed in this boxed set. I read through it once, but haven't used it directly in my campaign yet.
6.Vilhon Reach
Once again, I haven't used it in my campaign. But it was a great read. I'm definitely going to use the Emerald Enclave in my game some time.
7.Volo's Guide to the Dalelands
Pretty good region specific guide. It has info on all of the dales, as well as a Volo rating system of the major establishments in each village, town, and city. Great amount of information for such a small book.
8.Players Guide to the Forgotten Realms
The whole thing is just a story. Every few pages there is a table on things like "Wines of the Realms" and "Breads of the Realms". I'm glad I have it for those, but overall it isn't worth the money.
9.Castle Spulzeer(Adventure)
I haven't used it yet.
10.Book of Lairs
Great for when you have but ten minutes to plan for the next adventure. I have used many of the adventures in here. They are very easy to set up and great for improvisation.
11.Wizards and Rogues of the Realms
Nice little book. If you want your character to be from a certain area this book will tell exactly what you character would dress, act, and be like if he were.
12.Arabian Adventures(Al Qadim)
If you want to move your Forgotten Realms campaign south, way south, this is the book to get. There are rules for dehydration, fate, the evil eye, and more. As well there are many desert character kits, new spells, abilities, and much more. Must have!
13.Land of Fate(Al Qadim)
The companion to Arabian Adventures. The whole of Zakhara is detailed in this book. A great boxed set.
My Non-Realms Books
1.AD&D 2nd Edition Players Handbook
Essential!
2.AD&D 2nd Edition DMG
Essential!
3.Monsterous Manual
Great. Much better than all the compendium portfolios that had to be bought before. Very concise, tidy, and easy to cary.
4.First Edition Manual to the Planes
I have to admit, this is much better than all the Planescape stuff being put out now. Back in my day this book kicked ass, and it still does. Information on the planes, as well as the monsters whom inhabit them them fills this little volume quite nicely.
5.Wizard's Handbook
Not bad. It has a few wizard kits, some new spells, new magic items, and more. I used the random fantastic materials chart many times. I love to afflict a group member with a rare disease and tell the him that the only thing that will cure him is the "sorrow of a field" or something like that and see how the group handles it.
6.Psionic's Handbook
Psionics don't exist in the Realms. I haven't even used it yet. Maybe if I use a non-realms campaign some time, or the group is cast into another plane.
7.Castle Guide
I guess if I was playing in Cormry or a realm with a code of chivilry this might be usefull. But so far all it has done is collect dust on my bookshelf.
8.Eye of Doom, Eye of Pain, Eye to Eye (adventures)
These are some pretty good adventures. The whole series is about Beholders, which I didn't like too much before I got it (a floating eye, wow). But now I think they make a pretty wicked enemy to be up against.
