This month we interviewed Mumble01 for our player
profile. He is such an intelligent guy! Who would have thunk it?
:)
usually I ask age/sex/
location first...but instead I want to ask about your nick
did you choose this nick
because you mumble in real life?
Ah. Yeah,
sometimes. A old friend once affectionately referred to me mumbling
and I liked the word so I've used it for an online nickname ever
since.
it's cute and you can't
tell if you're male or female
which, by the way,
age/sex/location please
Can't
tell? Sheesh. :) 31/male/Massachusetts, south of Boston
single?
Yes, I am
single.
seeing anyone?
Not at the
moment.
what do you look for in
meeting women?
Availability. lol No, seriously? Ummm, intelligence,
a sense of adventure, and an open mind.
_kitten_ writes this down
on her notepad
You're
writing this stuff by hand?
LOL heck no. I'll just
save this log
what kind of work do you
do?
I'm a
professional computer geek, a.k.a. software engineer for a financial
software company in Boston.
good money?
Yeah,
enough to make me tolerate the daily commute filled with other
lemmin... er, yuppies.
so you are single and make
good money.....so why don't you have a girlfriend?
Good
question. I've met a few very nice people over the years but always
found a way to screw it up. I'm learning.
I see. I do wish you luck
:)
Thanks.
what else do you do
besides working and libbing?
I like
hopping in my car and driving long distances, either to visit a
friend, my family, or to go exploring. Seems like everyone I know is
about an hour away in various directions. I also try to get outdoors
and do the occasional hiking, camping, or go skiing.
so your family lives close
to you then?
Yeah, they
live in New Hampshire or down on Cape Cod, both of which aren't too
far away from me.
that's great! have you
gone skiing recently?
No, not at
all this winter yet. We just got our first significant snowfall in New
England about two weeks ago and the wind chill has been too low for
me to contemplate braving the elements just yet.
are you good at it?
skiing, that is
Quite a
strange winter we've been having. Mild temperatures in the 50s for a
month and then BLAMO, arctic chill in January.
yeah, it's even cold here
in florida, so I can imagine what it's like up north
I'm okay.
I'm technically an intermediate and I tend to stay on the blue trails
but I can handle most anything except for moguls. I can get down the
hill easy enough, I'm just not graceful about it
sometimes.
where do you
hike?
I like
picking small mountains that offer wide views after a few hours of
hiking on warm spring and summer afternoons. Monadnock in New
Hampshire is a favorite.
so you like to hike, ski,
explore, drive...anything else?
Travel now
and then, play with my computer a bit too much, read (doesn't
everyone?), listen to music, and hang out with a friend or two.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
what kind of music do you
listen to?
Mostly
rock and pop growing up, but lately I've been on a folk kick. I'm
listening to Michael Hedges right now.
we know you live near your
family...do you have any siblings?
Yes, my
little sister Michelle. She surprised the family at Christmas by
announcing that she and her husband were expecting their first child,
so that was nice.
that's cool! Uncle
Mumble...that has a nice ring to it
heh.
"Uncle" will be a novelty, but I suspect I'll grow into it.
:)
you will. it was weird
when my niece started to call me Aunt Kitten (hehe). but you'll get
used to it in no time
will you teach your
niece/nephew all about being a computer geek and skiing and other
stuff you like?
My
grandfather asked me about teaching the little one skiing just the
other day. Michelle's husband Gregg is a better skier than I am, so
he or she will be all set.
there ya go!
lol
But I'll
do my part... things like skiing are wonderful to pick up when you're
very young. I wish I had learned it back then.
what kind of books do you
like to read?
I try to
read some older fiction that I never got around to reading in school.
My tastes gravitate towards lesser known material... I just finished
"The Country of the Pointed Firs" by Sarah Orne Jewett.
was it any
good?
Yes, very
good. It was much more accessible than I thought it would
be.
Other
things... let's see. Some children's books that I somehow missed,
like Heidi. A biography of the landscape architect Fredrick Law
Olmstead... a time travel novel by Jack Finney. Odds and ends.
:)
I like to read biographies
or autobiographies for some reason
I have a
list of books a mile long that I'd love to read and only one slow
reading lifetime to do it all in.
I enjoy
them too. They provide an interesting glimpse into someone's inner
world that you don't often get any other way, short of marrying
them.
lol Mums
what brought you to
madlib?
I started
fooling around on IRC a couple of years ago and I played #acro from
time to time. Somewhere there talked about a game that was supposed
to be even more fun and I promptly tried it out. And they were right,
the game is much more rewarding.
I enjoy
games that allow the use of creativity and imagination. I'd come for
the laughs alone even if there wasn't a game... some of the answers
are hilarious.
what makes you such a good
player?
I'm a good
player? :)
LOL uh huh. do you come up
with answers right away or does it take you 30 seconds to think of
one?
I don't
know... I enjoy the challenge of trying to simultaneously amuse the
other people in the channel while also providing a good answer that
I've never used before. It keeps my brain sharp.
The stupid
answers come right away... sometimes I let them stay, other times
I'll work on them and submit a better one before the time runs
out.
and you get the
votes
but remember...stupid/lame
answers get the votes :)
This is
true. Sometimes an obscure reference does the trick. Other times I
like to throw a curveball and submit a sincere answer. They never
expect that. :)
You get
better at reading the mood of your fellow players over time as well.
When I first started playing over a year ago I was awful.
I've been playing longer
than you and I still stink at it!
Correct me
if I'm wrong, but didn't you just get 19 in the game we played before
this interview? :P
I wouldn't
call that stinkin' up the joint.
yes, but that was before
being slam dunked by the 'new' player. beginner's luck
We all
have our moments.
lol...I have too many of
them
_kitten_
giggles
I'll win
some games by a mile and then get 1 point in the next one. Everyone
votes for me in the first game and nobody does later.
Weird.
what do you like most
about the game?
The
camraderie of the players involved. The fact that answers are only
limited by your imagination.
and sometimes it's
difficult
yeah. My
sense of humor is sometimes too obscure for the channel, but I laugh
at my own jokes anyway.
you too? sometimes I write
an answer that is like a pun to the lib...but people don't get
it
Puns are
great. I personally love answers that people have to figure out. When
they do a little lightbulb goes off above their head and they feel
good.
yes, exactly. maybe I just
need to practice some more
I compare
the feeling to closely listening to the lyrics of a favorite song of
yours and realizing that it is about something completely perverted.
And you never knew it.
are you good at
puns?
Not
really. I don't pun as much as making references to things. Nursery
rhymes, culture, books... whatever I can think of.
so you are a learned
man
hah. Not
quite. I know a little about many things but that's about as far as
it goes.
awwww, well, you still
have time to become an 'oh wise one'
Yeah,
maybe then I'll be able to keep up with JAC and samoyed.
Then
again, do I really want to be in front of a computer that much?
:)
do you have any words of
wisdom to pass on to our beloved players?
Words of
wisdom? Hmmm...Many of the regulars I frequently see don't need any
advice from me.
but what about the
others?
For
everyone else, just have fun with the game, don't worry if you don't
win, and don't assume that people didn't understand the reference you
made just because they didn't vote for you.
ack, too
many negatives in that sentence.
that's okay...well, state
some positives then! :)
I'm
positive there were too many negatives in that sentence.
Ah, one
other thing I saw in a message board today. Words of wisdom indeed:
never refuse a breath mint.
roflmao!! that's right
folks, use Altoids for a good time
lol. Hmmm,
there's more to that saying than even I suspected... ;)
Altoids are good
btw
And I have
to keep stifling my dirty mind in the channel.
Yeah, so I
hear.
trust me...they are
good
I had some
long ago and thought they were powerful enough to stop the
flu.
stifling a dirty mind is
where the puns come in
Right. You
get no votes but you make three people giggle, so all in all it is a
positive.
any last words?
Last
words. Yes, well... ahem. I guess I'm a regular now because I hang
around #madlib while working on other stuff during the day. And the
other people who frequently visit the channel make it all worth
while.
awwwwwww, that's sweet.
that's about it unless you want to add anything
Even if
I'm younger than 90% of them. :)
hey now! :P
Mumble01
laughs
you're just a little
younger than I am
I know...
I can't exactly use "young" and "me" in the same sentence anymore.
Have to remember that.
haha
That's all
I can think of at the moment.
Special thanks to
Mumble01 for taking time out of his busy life of being a computer
geek, avid reader, intermediate skier and soon-to-be uncle to be
interviewed .
