The descent of the Batman with the "bat-nose" (on page 34) has the same brooding, moody
feel that I associate with the earliest theatrical serials. The gargoyle image
(on page 32) and the feel that a protector is emerging has a more dark knight feel
as if it was emerging from the late 1980s. The technology of the Batman is clearly
up to date...though not yet complete. As Batman, Wayne Williams becomes the best and most
intriguing professional wrestler to ever hit the canvas. I think even I could try
watching wrestling if he entered the ring.
The death of Wayne's father is not actually a part of the book. The funeral is a big part
of the motivation for the story, but I would like to know more about this death. A more full
understanding of the Batman's future would be gained by this understanding. However, it would seem
that the full explanation of this death might be the subject of a future work.
The foreshadowing of the new Batman's biggest foe and ultimately greatest threat to
his existence implies the need for an additional volume. Perhaps the story could even
be developed into an ongoing series...if DC and Stan Lee are interested.
I am sure it would be interesting.
The book ends in a vaguely familiar way...sort of Terminator/Alien like in that the future
is clearly uncertain and there are wild forces at work operating in ways largely unknown and
somehow sinister. The closing images are haunting. The readers are left wondering
and wanting more. Is the Batman a killer? Is he a man with a mission who knows when
it is better to stay alive than to die saving an enemy? Perhaps he is simply misunderstood and
troubled by the evil of this world. How will he cope? Can he survive?
This Batman is clearly not Bruce Wayne. The "Alfred" figure seems more a combination of
the scientist of the Superman comic books and the confidante that the "real" Alfred embodies.
The woman of this story could be a Lois Lane or Lana Lang. Yet, she could conceivably turn out
to be a Delilah. We have only just met these characters. We don't know them yet.
The implications of the Batman making his home in Los Angeles are untouched. At this point
the Batman is so new to crime fighting that only his own battles have been fought.
Los Angeles could keep a team of Batmen busy. How far will this man go in his battle for good?
Maybe there is no room for another Batman. No. Clearly the world has room to allow the
development of seamstress Wayne Williams. Oh. Did I forget to mention that the
big old scary Batman was a seamstress?
