When we first started to write our Friends & Lovers fan fic we found it difficult, if not impossible, to keep the timelines straight. None of the shows involved in the universe stayed completely consistent when creating character backgrounds and our mucking around with them didn't help.

In recent years, one of things we have been doing is writing journals for the characters. It’s a far cry from the messy and complicated charts and note files we used when we first started writing, before home PC's were the norm.

At first, we used them primarily to keep the timelines straight, but they've also proved useful and fun as a way to explain a shows inconsistencies and to flesh out neglected characters. We try to update the journals periodically when we've added characters to our universe or made major changes in established people. Up to now, we've concentrated on the women, but are starting to add a similar format for the male characters.
