Mission Accomplished: Project ArborTinian Northern Mariana IslandsMay 23, 2001 -- Arbor Week in Tinian began yesterday with the Tachogna beach cleanup project of Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino dubbed as “Mission Not Impossible: Project Arbor.” Armed with rakes, machete and sickle, the staff and executive members of Tinian Dynasty took time off from one of their usual busy Monday afternoons and trooped to Tachogna Beach not withstanding a heavy shower at noon yesterday. When the downpour finally turned into a drizzle at 2:45 p.m. on May 21, 2001, 74 sweepers and divers from Tinian Dynasty, Big Boyz II Marine, Marianas Visitors Authority and the Department of Gaming Promotions of the Tinian Mayor’s Office began their quest to collect trash and debris on the shoreline, seabed and “tangan-tangan” areas of Tachogna beach. Working in groups, the cleanup project took nearly 4 hours to complete. Besides sweeping the area clean from trash, two groups worked together in rolling out carpets of bushes from the shore. “Now Tachogna has more shoreline for the tourists and us to enjoy,” observes Tom Liu, the hotel’s general manager. The day’s catch yielded more than 150 bagfuls of trash, weeds and debris. But before the day ended a search for the most unique trash was organized. The entries were – a plastic slipper that the group jokingly described as Cinderella’s, a baseball, rusted pulley intact with a rusty rope, a watch, a strap and a funny-looking screw. Tinian Dynasty’s group of five divers won prizes from Hollywood Theater for the huge and corroded pulley they seized from the sea. Another winner was the finder of the funny-looking screw. Actively working on the project was the Dynasty Social Club, the steering committee for employee activities of Tinian Dynasty, in cooperation with the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Tinian Mayor’s Office and Big Boyz II Marine. The project was created not only as a response to the May CNMI Tourism Awareness Month. Ellen Ikehara of MVA-Tinian said during a discussion with DSC officers on the project’s inception stage that the idea was more on getting the private business sectors involved in the care of our environment. Tachogna Beach was chosen because it is a water activity beach and picnic sight for Tinian visitors and the local community. "We are blessed to have such a beautiful beach. The least we could give back to mother nature is to clean it… and keep it clean," comments Biresh Limbu, DSC president. Limbu quips this is definitely not the last. Another Tachogna beach cleanup project by the Tinian Dynasty personnel and staff is on the way soon, he adds. |
