Singapore (2001 & 2002) is one of my favorite cities. It is so clean. And the landscaping is just beautiful. It’s a great weekend getaway town. The laws are strict, but I saw so many people breaking them. The first time here, I was worried about breaking some law that I didn’t know about. It turned out not to be a problem at all. Just be smart.
My favorite place to stay is at the Merchant Court across the river from Clarke Quay. There is a little shop right by the bridge called Quayside Art. James Koh is an artist who does watercolors on silk. Absolutely stunning, and not too pricey. He also does the Chinese character names.
The ex-pat area is Orchid Street. That’s for all the shopping nuts out there. I don’t enjoy that area as much. There are a few authentic shops and this is the place to go to get your tailored shirts and suits. There’s also a place right across the street from the Grand Copthorne Waterfront that does an excellent job.
Then there is Holland Village. It’s more of an upscale local area. There is a great massage parlor at the bottom of the hill. It’s at 29A & C Lorong Liput Road. Ask for Benny or Leo. They also do hair styling. Great people! Very fun and friendly. I do not know if they offer “full release massage”, but I’m sure they do. :-} The indoor shopping here is just typical of Singapore. Up the street, and the hill, is a very nice and reasonable priced jade jewelry shop.
Also, be mindful that if a hotel calls itself on the water front, that does not mean you are near anything. The river runs through and past several out of the way places that don’t even have a river taxi dock. I know they are building like crazy to add more - but just be mindful.
