Animated GIFs = bad or good? - Friday, 31 July 1998

Here's some comments before we start!

The 'under construction' complex. Noticed how long the aminated gifs below take to load?? I have already reduced their size! Some of the pages on the WWW have these strewn all over them, cute and funny to look at, do they do more harm than good? Read on...

Yes, some of the pages I visit are appalling! Those who suffer what I term as the 'under construction' complex  must be one of the worst things I have ever come across why?? It stinks! It shows that the web master is not really confident about his/her page, hoping that the little under construction gif will remind the visitors to keep coming back for more.

It is an undisputed fact that web sites are constantly growing, and hence the sites are always UNDER CONSTRUCTION anyways, I believe that you should not put up unactive links or imcompleted pages because it shows that you are lazy and do not finish what you have started!

GENERAL RULE OF THUMB is do not exceed 50 kb on each web of your web page. If you exceed that limit, just remind yourself, every 10 kb is an additional 4 seconds of download time. This 4 seconds was measured on a good day. God only knows how fast 10 kb comes through on a bad internet connection day.

Solution: Get rid of them!

Those pesky under-construction animated gifs! They take up space and useful bandwidth! If your page has content, people will always visit them and it also helps that you show a log of your more recent updates, this creates the awareness that your page is always full of new stuff being added all the time! Oh and did I mention you MUST update your page from time to time? Or you will lose your audience!
So delete the <IMG SRC="under_construction.gif"> bit...!!! BYE BYE!!! JAVA WORKER!!
If you adbolutely MUST have them, I highly highly recommend you visit this really cool site:
Web Optimiser - http://www.webopt.com - then what you do is download the program and use it to make your animated GIFs smaller, in size. It won't take up too much image quality and I highly recommend it!
