Mitzrah's Get IT Right Column!

Dear Homesteaders!

Now the next challenge is to upload your files! Let us say you have all your cool HTML files and GIFs and JPGs in one of your directories on your hard disk. Let us say that the directory is : e:\homepages\geocities, ok?!

  1. Start up Cute_FTP if you haven't done so already.
  2. The program should look something like this:
    Logging in with CuteFTP
  3. Now, select "[GeoCities] ftp.oocities.com" as per our last example. Or if you called it under another name select that name.
  4. Double click on the name and you should see your directory over at GeoCities! And your desktop directory. Now the column on the left is your directory on your local hard drive while the column on the right shows what files you have over at GeoCities. Now browse to your directory where you keep all your files for upload!
    Right clicking on highlighted bits.
  5. Ok now pay attention.... SELECT the files you want to upload, I wanted to transfer a whole bunch of assorted files over like so: If you want to select a whole bunch of GIFs like me, you have to click on the STARTING file and then HOLD DOWN the SHIFT key, and click on the ENDING file you want to upload.

This is the sequence: click starting file, hold shift key, DON'T LET GO OF THE SHIFT KEY, click ending file, mission accomplished! Your files will then be highlighted as the above.
  6. Then, right click on the highlighted area, and select "UPLOAD"
  7. Right, that's it! Let CuteFTP do its job while you go and make yourself a cup of tea!
  8. Please remember to close CuteFTP once it is done or else it will keep the connection alive for you ok?!
  9. Now you know how to get your files over to GeoCities via FTP!

Some things to remember!

  1. You must have an index.html or index.htm file in order for your homepage to be set up correctly.
  2. Please remember to DELETE your OLD index.html file [not on your hard disk, but on GeoCities] which is put onto your directory by default if your homepage isn't showing up.
  3. If you get an "OOOps! We couldn't find that file" page, please make sure you have entered your URL properly! Common mistakes are as follows: http://www.oocities.org/tokyo/6140 will not bring you to my page but http://www.oocities.org/Tokyo/6140 will.
