Mitzrah's Get IT Right Column!

Here are the steps involved in making thumbnails.

  1. Open Paint Shop Pro if you haven't already done so.
  2. Open the picture that you want to make a thumbnail of. You can use the shortcut (CTRL + O) or access it through the menu bar as shown here :
    Accessing the 'Open File' feature.
  3. Browse for your picture on the hard disk or floppy drive. If you would like to see a preview, then check the box on "Show Preview" as shown below:.
Opening and browsing for the orignal picture.
  4. Once you have found the desired picture, double click on it and the picture will be opened on the program box as shown here :
This is what the original image looks like.
  5. The next step is to access the RESIZE feature, the shortcut is (SHIFT + S) or you can get to it through the menu bar, via Image -- Resize. Once you do any of the actions above you will be greeted with this dialogue box:
    Resizing the image.
  6. You have to make sure that "Resize all layers" and "Maintain aspect ratio" is checked because if not, something may go haywire with the resizing! Please take a nice size for the picture, in my case, I think 100 pixels should be a good size, not too big and not too small, so I set the width to 100 pixels. After that, I click on OK.
  7. If everything goes well, the newly resized picture should be a lot smaller, like here:
    Our new thumbnail sized original
  8. The next step is to save (press F12 not CTRL + S, CTRL + S will save and overwrite the original image with the thumbnail.  We don't want that now do we. If in case of mistake, you can always use the UNDO button or press CTRL + Z) the newly made thumbnail. I usually put a prefix on them to signify that they are thumbnails. For example, say the original picture's name is kna3.jpg the thumbnail could be named tkna3.jpg or t_kna3.jpg. When you have a lot of files it helps to identify which is which you know? Or set up a new directory for thumbnails altogether.

Now that we have made our thumbnail we should learn how to link them. Those who know about linking images and all should skip this section after all it is quite elementary! But here we go!
