Pikachu Genki Dechu

In Japan, Pikachu is huge. He has his own dolls, posters, stickers, clothes, stuffed animals, rings, stationary, and his own TV anime series. So it was no surprise when Nintendo decided to give him his own video game, along with one of the most creative pieces of hardware ever to grace a console game.

Released in Japan this year just in time for the holidays, Pikachu Genki Dechu (which literally translates to “Pikachu is feeling fine”) one of the three Pokémon titles for N64 looks to be a winner. In essence, the game is a virtual pet simulator, along the lines of Bandai’s Tamagotchi; Pikachu Genki Dechu is a very interesting title, with a special little twist. Like Pokémon Stadium, and Star fox 64 the game comes with an added hardware bonus, which is vital to underlying the concept of the game: a voice recognition system.

That’s right. You can actually talk to Pikachu and he responds! For instance, if you say to Pikachu “baka” which means stupid, Pikachu will become angry and ignore you. It takes a lot of patience to earn his trust back. On the other hand, Pikachu would be very happy about friendly comments like “kawaii” (cute) and want to play when encouraged. Every time you say a word, a little microphone icon at the bottom of the screen lights up, telling you if the command was understood. It is unknown how many phrases Pikachu understands.

But since this is Nintendo, they added a few puzzles, quirks, and mini games to keep you interested. For instance since this is a virtual pet simulator, Pikachu needs to be fed and entertained. And if he’s hungry, but doesn’t have any food, you have to find some. If Pikachu finds an apple in a tree but can’t reach it, then you have to find a way to get it down. Just take his favorite toy, a ball, and knock it down!

Pikachu’s world was designed with great attention to detail and can be interacted with in many ways. When Pikachu gets bored, he may wonder around, searching for something to do. If he meets other Pokémon , He can interact with them and even make friends. Pikachu also has many different mini games, such as questioning you on different Pokémon , Wanting you to identify them by their shadows. There are also many others, like even a Pikachu Fishing Excursion included as a side-quest.

Like all of the other Pokémon N64 games, Nintendo has still not announced whether or not they will make it to the U.S. But with the success of the GB game, Pikachu Genki Dechu is almost guaranteed to make a splash here.
