ARC
Bowling
In 1999 we took over an existing small bowling program
affiliated with the ARC California State Bowling Commission. Our first
year we struggled with learning and recruiting volunteers to coordinate
the bowling on Saturdays. The 2001-2001 (Sept-May) was a very successful
year. More than 50 men and women participated at the Petaluma and
Rohnert Park bowling alleys. Fifteen qualified for our County-Regional
Tournament on March 30.
First
place trophies were awarded to four women champions. Fourteen went
on to the State Tournament held at the Reno Hilton, which has a 50
lane bowling alley inside the hotel. About 20 family members and friends
went along to cheer them on. One man and one woman won first place
trophies. There were 366 bowlers there from all over California and
there were nearly 700 at the final awards banquet May 4.
Coalition
on Aging and Developmental Disabilities
In 1992, we became a cosponsor with the Gerontology Program
at Sonoma State University in forming a Coalition on Aging and Developmental
Disabilities. This was a training and advocacy effort to encourage retirement
for older adults being served in vendor programs. We have done outreach
to find those older people still living at home with older parents and
have never been identified for service agencies. We have sponsored workshops
on longevity issues and done training in service agencies. In 1995 this
vision was caught by the Arc of California and assisted in the development
of training and workshops all over the State. Many new retirement options
have been opened. We have six such special programs in Sonoma County.
Kamp Kennedy
The last Camp Kennedy was August 6th-9th at Howarth Park Gazebo between Tuesday-Thursday 9:30-3:00 pm and Friday 1:00-7:00. Campers were required to be able to go to the toilet independently, but Elvis Bozarth was accommodating those who couldn't. Applications were submitted to Amy Rocklewitz at the Santa Rosa Recreation Center and the cost was $95 and a $25 deposit needed to reserve space. The camp is a regular yearly event and so the information should probably stay pretty consistent. You may contact us for more information.
People First Freedom
In 1998 at the request of a woman with cerebral palsy
we began a self-advocacy support group for adults with developmental
disabilities. They have adopted the name People First Freedom. They
meet in our building the fourth Thursday, most of the time in our building.
Two years ago a group of people with physical disabilities began meeting
here each month to learn the self-advocacy skills to enforce laws such
as the American with Disabilities Act (1990) and to improve accessible
public transportation.
