ARC
Bowling
Our bowling
trips take place every Saturday (except the last two weeks of December)
and provide disabled persons and their family members the experience
of being on a team. We also sponsor a bowling tournament in the spring
and fall.
Our bowling is affiliated with the ARC of California's State Bowling
Commission. The Commission sponsors a State Bowling Tournament in Santa
Rosa each year. Our Saturday bowling trips are devoted to practicing
for the State Tournament.
ARC is currently holding bowling leagues in two bowling alleys. One,
at Petaluma AMF Lanes every first and third Saturday of the month. This
resumes on January 4th. And another, at Double Decker Lanes every second
and fourth Saturday of the month. This resumes on January 11th.
Bowlers are allowed to bowl every week if they desire. We will accept
scores from Bowling with Special Olympics, UCP, residential and day
program Activities.
Bumper bowling is not allowed in the State Tournament in May. It is
acceptable to use bumpers in our Program just for the fun of it. ASSISTED
Bowling is allowed as long as the following instructions are followed;
and any bowling done off a ramp is ASSISTED BOWLING. Last Spring some
who had been using bumpers gave them up and then learned that their
scored were higher without the bumpers.
Discount
State and Federal Park Passes
Available
to permanently disabled people; the pass entitled the person with disabilities
and their immediate family to discounts on entrance feeds, camping,
boating and more. The state charges a one time fee of $3.50 and required
filling out a form, which is available at Phase One. Just give us a
call for a copy. The federal pass must be obtained in person at any
federal area that charges an entrance fee. Proof of disability is needed.
Kamp
Kennedy Scholarships
Kamp Kennedy is an annual day camp for children ages
8 to 18 with developmental disabilities that take place each August
in Howarth Park in Santa Rosa. It is sponsored by the ARC of Sonoma
County and the Santa Rosa Parks and Recreation Department. The camp
provides a variety of fun recreational, educational, and creative activities
such as hiking, boating, crafts, songs, stories, games, swimming, and
outdoor cooking.
Lending
Library
Our Lending
Library contains a wide variety for resources that pertain to a whole
gamut of disabilities and conditions. These resources include books,
computer software (Macintosh and Windows), toys, and audio tapes that
have helped parents, teachers, and members of the general public. All
of these resources are available for loan for periods up to one month.
Adaptive
Technology and Devices
In
addition to our Lending Library, we also maintain an extensive collection
of specially-designed equipment that allows a disabled person to participate
in daily activities. For example, a large part of our collection consists
of hardware that makes it easier to use a computer.
Parent
Support Meetings
Closely
aligned with our Parent to Parent program, we also offer a network of
weekly and monthly meetings for parents. These meetings give parents
an opportunity to share experiences and discuss topics of mutual interest.
Parent to Parent
This is a support network of parents who have all experienced what it's
like to learn that their child has a disability. We know that it can
be traumatic to discover your child has a disability. There are others
who can help you. You don't have to go it alone.
Respite
Registry
One
new activity is our RESPITE SERVICES REGISTRY wherein we register names
of people who desire to provide respite services to families and we
then provide this Registry to families who desire it. We do not screen
workers or recommend them. All arrangements for respite work are between
the worker and families who hire them.
We know that caring for your disabled loved one can be very stressful.
Our goal with the Respite Registry is to provide a list of people who
have expressed an interest in doing respite work for your family. These
respite volunteers can provide you the time to take care of other things
in your life, or simply give you the opportunity to escape from the
stress you're under.
Self-esteem
Library for Children with Special Needs
It
can be confusing for a disabled child -- often they may only realize
that they're different from other children and not understand the reasons
why. The books, videos, and toys in our Self Esteem library are directed
specifically to disabled children and can help them understand and cope
with the disability they have.
Sibling
Lending Library
The siblings of a
disabled child can often feel that they're being ignored. Our Sibling
Lending Library is directed at these siblings and contains books and
videos that address the difficulties associated with having a disabled
brother or sister.
