        "Each
          person's map of the world is a unique as the person's thumbprint. There
          are no two people alike. No two people who understand the same sentence
          the same way. . . . So in dealing with people, you try not to fit them
          into your concept of what they should be." -Dr.
          Betty Carr of the California Department of Education

      The
        ADVOCACY RESOURCE CENTER - SONOMA COUNTY, INC. seeks . . . .

        - To
          improve the quality of lives of people with mental retardation and with
          developmental, mental and physical disabilities and their families;

        - To work
          through advocacy, information, programs of public policy, support and
          training;

        - To prevent
          the causes and effects of these disabilities due to birth defects, diseases
          and injuries.

        - To accomplish
          this Mission, we cooperate and collaborate with other individuals, organizations
          and government agencies on issues of common concern.

        The Advocacy
          Resource Center - Sonoma County is a private, nonprofit organization
          dedicated to improving the quality of the lives of children, youth,
          adults and senior citizens who have developmental special needs of all
          kinds. These may exist due to birth defects, health problems, or disabilities
          (intellectual, physical and mental).
        Here, at
          the Advocacy Resource Center, we have tried to respect the individual
          needs of each person who comes to us--we are asked, "How do you
          serve people?"-- The response is "One person at a time."
          While emphasize the individual needs of each person, we recognize the
          need to acknowledge diversity. Often, the person we are supporting has
          individual needs because of their diversity. We strive to encompass
          the diversity necessary to translate this philosophy into our organizational
          structure, policy, programs and resource materials.
