Its mesmerizing multi-color with red, green and lavender fire against in the translucent, blue-white background rivals fine Australian opal. It is suitable for a pendant as well as display in a collection. The opal was mined from the hard rhyolite of eastern Idaho.
Spencer, Idaho is the best known of several Idaho opal locations. Tourists may also try their luck separating gem material from the hard rhyolite, but it's not an experience for those with little patience, or cubicle denizens with little arm and shoulder strength. Also goggles, gloves and head protection are must-haves to protect from sharp flying chips of rhyolite and opal alike.
