Their harlequin pattern, multi-color fire rivals the finest of any Australian opal. The nearly transparent, golden semi-crystal background makes the fire display well when worn next to skin. The golden crystal and semi-crystal background of most Mexican precious opals blends in with the skin, often better than white or gray semi-crystal opals, making any fire appear more prominently.
Like most North American, opal, these gemstones were mined from difficult, hard rhyolite deposits, but the clear crystal background and strong fire makes it worth the effort.
The Opalos Mexicanos mines are among the best and most consistently productive in the Querétaro area of Mexico. They are owned by a private extended family, who are so successful in their sales of this gem that they conduct business almost exclusively in Spanish.
