The former workhouse, now Clitheroe Hospital, while not a listed building, is an important example of Victorian design. The Society, in conjunction with the Victorian Society, has been active in trying to prevent the façade of the Clitheroe Hospital from being demolished as a result of the forthcoming development.

News Update!

At their meeting on Thursday 21st May 2009, the Ribble Valley Borough Council Planning Committee, refused permission to demolish the hospital for the following reasons:

1. The demolition would result in the loss of a building of considerable architectural quality and result to the detriment of the visual amenities of the locality and as such be contrary to Policy G1 of the District wide Local Plan.

Recommendation 2. The Council request that the Building and Development Control Manager ( John Macholc) seeks to continue to negotiate with the applicant to explore alternatives which may involve the retention of the building.

We now have to wait to see if the East Lancashire Primary Care Trust will put in an appeal, which could take months so we are not absolutely certain yet that we have finally saved the building.

                                                  STOCK WELL PLAQUE

The small historic Stock Well (next to Trinity Methodist Church) now has a new commemorative plaque, thanks to County Cllr. Stephen Sutcliffe who obtained a grant from Lancashire County Council on behalf of Clitheroe Civic Society. Mr. R. O. Jones devised the informative wording, showing that the well was in use before 1645. The Society wishes to thank Mr. Bill Barker from rotary who erected the plaque so efficiently and speedily. Clitheroe Civic Society has worked for many months to replace the former missing plaque and is delighted that it was in place before the official museum opening on 23rd May when many visitors were expected to visit the castle.

The residents of Clitheroe have to thank the late Mr. M. Holden for the detailed information on this plaque. A member of Clitheroe Civic Society, he was the person who researched the history of the three town wells more thoroughly than any other local historian, past or present. Without his research the Society would not have been able to share these details with the public.
