ANNA IS BANISHED
The prospect of appearing nude turned out to be the Achilles Heel for the first model to be eliminated on the season premiere of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. Anna , the 24-year-old housewife and mother from LaGrange, Georgia, chose not to appear in the first photo shoot covered only by jewels and body paint. Even though Jenascia , the 21-year-old waitress from Burien, Washington, was over two hours late for the shoot, the panel of judges could not overlook Anna's attitude and refusal to participate in the first shoot and eliminated her from the show.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
The finalists meet in groups of three for the first time on the streets of Manhattan, where a large luxury bus is to pick them up. The first group of three consists of Catie , Xiomara and Anna. Anna, the 24-year-old housewife and mother from LaGrange, Georgia, proudly tells the other girls that she is married and has a two-year-old son. Xiomara, the 25-year-old bartender from Morganville, New Jersey, is completely impressed with Anna's drive and dedication. Catie, the 18-year-old wire stripper from Willmar, Minnesota, lets everyone know that she left high school early to move from her hometown to Los Angeles to pursue her career as a model. She states matter-of-factly, "College will be there and modeling won't."

When Catie sees April , Yoanna and Camille board the bus, her first impression is, "Wow, what a group of beautiful girls!" April, the 23 year-old corporate business account manager from Miami Beach, Florida, has left her job with a Fortune 500 company to come pursue this other side of her personality. Yoanna, the 23-year-old babysitter from Jacksonville, Florida, says she has always wanted to be a high fashion model, but she used to be 50 pounds heavier and couldn't fit into any designer clothes. She hired a trainer and lost the weight.

Back out on the streets, we meet Bethany , the 22-year-old waitress from Houston, Texas, a self-proclaimed "blonde with bigger boobs" who wants the world to know she can do more than swimsuit modeling and that she has more talent than just her boobs. Walking down the street is Shandi , the 21-year-old Walgreen's clerk from Kansas City, Missouri. Up until about two years ago, she was a "mousy, nerdy" type of girl and has the pictures to prove it. Something happened, though, and she started wearing more "girly" things and applying more makeup. She says it would be nice to feel better about herself. If Shandi is looking for a self-confidence boost, she won't find it in Bethany, who tells us that Shandi is tall and thin, "but her eyes are very close together which kinda reminds me of a bird."

Shandi and Bethany meet Sara , and all three board the bus. Sara, the 22-year-old hostess from Seattle, Washington, tells us she is half Iranian and half American. She has always wanted to be a model, but her dad considers modeling to be prostitution. Despite her father's condemnation of the modeling industry, she is determined to follow her dream. "I am not going to let somebody tear that down," she says resolutely. Camille, the 25-year-old student from Mamaroneck, New York, says her biggest accomplishment in life was being the Miss Jamaica US first runner-up.

Heather , Jenascia and Mercedes are the last three to board the bus. Heather, the 18-year-old customer service representative from Moreno Valley, California, tells the audience at home that she is going to win this because her age allows her to pursue it longer than everyone else. Jenascia, the 21-year-old waitress from Burien, Washington, quickly starts sizing everyone up and has doubts when she notices that she is the shortest one on the bus. Mercedes, the 22-year-old waitress from Valencia, California, is originally from New Jersey, where she was "the rudest girl ever," but then she moved to Valencia and it made her a better person.

ALL HANDS ON DECK
The twelve finalists are all together for the first time and have no idea what is in store for them next. To their shock, they are taken to an aircraft carrier, which prompts Mercedes to worry, "Oh God, please don't let it be military training!" They are brought up to the deck of the carrier where Tyra Banks is waiting for them. She tells them they aren't wasting any time. "I'm throwing you straight on a runway with no training, no nothing. I want to see what you got," she tells them. The girls' faces drop. They realize that the competition has begun sooner than they had expected.

The girls are taken back and given the rules to their first runway show. First, each girl must do her own hair and makeup. Second, they have exactly thirty minutes to get ready. Lastly, and most importantly, they must put on each of their three outfits picked out for them in the order designated on the tags. The rush is on as the clock starts ticking.

THE SCRAMBLE BEGINS
With 14 minutes left, no one looks completely ready. The clock keeps ticking away and the tension rises. With 4:17 left, almost all the girls have pulled it together and start to line up in their first outfits. Jenascia is ready but looks over and realizes that April is not lined up with the rest of the girls. She has put on her second outfit first! With only 1:29 left before the runway show starts, Jenascia rushes over to help dress April, who is now crying and saying, "I managed to screw up within the first ten minutes of this competition." With the help of Jenascia, April is able to switch outfits in the nick of time and head out to the runway. Jenascia is quite proud of herself, noting, "I am not really that nice of a person. I don't know what's come over me."

Most of the girls admit they have never done this before as they head out onto the runway. Tyra is out there looking for rookie mistakes and finds quite a few ranging from girls who have never walked in boots to girls who are over "sexified."

When it is over, Jay Alexander, the world famous runway trainer, walks in and quickly points out that they all "suck." April is quick to think that he is specifically talking about her. Jay tells them there is hope, though; they just have to be open to change. Their first challenge is over and they are told they get to go move into their new pad!

WELCOME HOME
The girls' living quarters are a sight to be seen. It is completely decked out in designer furniture, complete with a disco ball hanging from the ceiling, hardwood floors everywhere and even a runway in the living room. All of the girls are in awe of their new home. They are quick to head to the bedrooms and discover that each of the three bedrooms has a theme.

The first one is the "bling-bling" room, which has diamonds to spare on the walls and leopard print furniture and pink walls. The "punk-funk" room has a lighted bed in the middle that sleeps four in a square. Its dark walls give a definite moodiness to the room. The final room is the "mod" room, which looks straight out of an Andy Warhol painting, with vibrant colors gracing the walls in a post-modern mural on the wall. It is the only room with bunk beds.

SLEEPING THROUGH A TRAIN WRECK
The morning rolls around and the alarm clocks go off at 5:10 am. Panic arises when all the girls realize that they only have a few precious minutes to get ready. In their commotion they lose track of who is awake and who is asleep. The girls walk down to the waiting van, and April realizes there are only 11 girls there! She quickly deduces that Jenascia is missing. She managed to sleep through the commotion.

April is torn. Jenascia was the one who helped her during the runway competition and she says she feels obligated to help Jenascia. "I am not able to help her out and get her into that van without jeopardizing every single other person's ability to get to the shoot," she says. "It is tearing me up inside," she agonizes. Mercedes has a different view on the whole situation and says, "It is survival of the fittest." The van leaves with Jenascia still asleep and unaware that she is being left behind.

THE FIRST SHOOT AS THE FIRST WOMAN
The eleven girls are taken to Industrial Studios and introduced to their photographer, Nigel Barker . He welcomes them to the studio in a charming British accent. They learn they are there to do a spread for First Look Super Vision Contact Lenses. The theme for this spread will be the Garden of Eden. Each girl will be transformed into a "vision of original beauty" as Eve using only body paint provided by Body Cast http://www.bodycastco.com . The girls will be the Eves and will be posing with a nude male model. The girls' eyes open wide. Nigel tells them that they will be nude, but everything will be covered. Anna, the mother and housewife, looks nervous and tells us, "I didn't appreciate it. It's just not being lady-like."

Nigel notices that there are only 11 girls in front of him. The person in charge of the photo shoot tries to reach Jenascia, but the phone just rings and rings back at the apartment. After a couple more tries, at 7:49 am, she hears the phone and picks it up. When she realizes what has happened, the tears begin to flow. "I don't know how this happened! I thought I would hear their alarm clock or at least them or maybe someone would wake me up," she cries. She slams the phone down and calls all the rest of the girls "bitches."

The girls start to get their "wardrobe" on. Each girl will be painted and jeweled up to be different versions of Eve ranging from Asian Eve to Heavenly Eve to Egyptian Eve. All the girls appear to be enjoying themselves, as they get ready for their first shoot. Jenascia, on the other hand, is frantically trying to get to the studio. When she finally does arrive over two hours late, none of her fellow models say anything to her. She looks around with tears still in her eyes. Nigel comes up to her and comforts her and tells her that everything is fine. Jenascia calls the girls "bitches" again and vows, "If this doesn't get me eliminated, it's on!"

BANISHED!
The photo shoot proceeds as Nigel works with all the girls. Each girl is taken onto the set where she is paired up with an Adam who is naked without any body paint. Anna watches from the sidelines as the other girls do their shoots. She becomes more and more hesitant about doing the shoot. She is concerned with the fact that "coochies were showing" to the male models. She tells us that she feels that the only one that should see her private parts is her husband. "If I show it to the whole world, what is so special when I give it to him?" she questions. She decides she can't do the shoot as a mother and a wife. Nigel goes over and talks to Anna, but Anna still refuses to do the shoot. "I'm sorry, I'm going to have to ask you to leave then," Nigel says, and with that, Anna is banished from the Garden of Eden.

The photo shoot ends and the girls go back to their apartment. Tyra Mail arrives, letting them know that tomorrow they will be meeting the judges for the first time and there will be an elimination. Anna wants to believe her refusal to do the shoot "didn't jeopardize my chances at all." Jenascia is fretting that her tardiness has guaranteed her a one-way ticket back to her hometown of Burien, Washington.

JUDGMENT DAY
The girls come into the Judging Room and meet this year's judges. They are Tyra Banks; Janice Dickinson , one of the first supermodels; Eric Nicholson , Senior Fashion Editor for Jane Magazine; and Nigel Barker. The prize for the winner of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL is a contract with IMG Models, one of the top modeling management companies in the world; a cosmetic campaign with Sephora and a spread in Jane Magazine.

The judges will be rating the models on five things: natural talent, potential talent, versatility, personality and their performance in the photo shoots. Each girl will be given an individual critique, and then the judges will deliberate and choose who should be eliminated.

PRIVATE CRITIQUES
Based on the critiques given by the judges on the aircraft carrier catwalk, the girls' runway abilities leave quite a bit to be desired. Nigel said that Xiomara's walk was good, but her eyes weren't really connecting. April is told that her walk is OK, but she needs to learn what to do at the end of the runway. Anna is told she looks too much like a beauty queen, not a model. Mercedes walks away with the best critique, but even it has a caveat. Nigel tells her that though she has the confidence and attitude, she needs to refine it.

Mercedes gets great comments on her photo too. She is told that her pose is great, her stance is great and her face is a knock out. Tyra tells Heather that her body is gorgeous and her muscle tone is great. Tyra tells Sara, "You are borderline plus size." Sara looks a little bewildered by the comment and smiles. Tyra quickly chimes in with, "but I think plus size is absolutely gorgeous." Shandi is amazed at her picture. Tyra asks her if she ever thought she could look this good. Nigel thinks Shandi's pictures are stunning, but she needs to work on her everyday clothes noting that she looks more like a college student than a model wannabe. Bethany is told she needs to be more conscience of her body.

When it is time for Anna to be judged on her photo, it is quickly brought up that she did not do the photo shoot. Anna responds that she didn't think it was lady like to be nude in the photo shoot. Nigel, the photographer, takes offense to that comment and asks, "What does that mean?" Janice says she gets it now though, "it's your religion." Anna is quick to retort, "It's not so much religion," but that she is trying to be Christ-like.

Jenascia is told she needs to be softer. After his critique of the photo, Nigel brings up the fact that Jenascia was late to the photo shoot. The other judges shake their heads in disappointment. She is told that she is short for a model at 5'7" and she needs to compensate and being late won't do that.

DELIBERATIONS
The judges are now left alone to talk about each of the girls in private. They think that April has sex appeal in a subtle way. Heather has potential, Sara can smile and Camille may be too cocky. Janice's favorite so far is Mercedes, but she thinks Yoanna's face is perfection. Tyra likes Jenascia, but states, "Late, I hate!" All the judges say they would like Catie to stay. Xiomara does look great in her photos, they say, but maybe she has too many teeth. Tyra isn't worried about that because they can always fix that. Bethany is referred to as a Dr. Seuss character with her big boobs. Eric says he isn't feeling her. Shandi is unusual but a beautiful girl. Anna's refusal to do the shoot is still bothering Janice. Eric says it isn't so much that she didn't do the photo shoot; it is her attitude about it that is bugging him. It is brought up in her defense that Anna didn't know about the shoot and wasn't warned.

FIRST PERSON TO LEAVE IS…
The girls are brought back into the room and told that the judges have reached a decision. Tyra holds the pictures of 11 girls in her hand. Those girls will be invited to stay and continue their journey. All of the girls get their pictures except Anna and Jenascia. Tyra asks them to step forward so she may talk to them.

Tyra tells Anna that all the judges are quite disappointed in her for not doing the photo shoot, but the judges tried to respect the fact that she is a mother and wife. Jenascia is told in no uncertain terms that being late is unacceptable and she is going to have to learn to fend for herself. With that, Tyra reaches down and turns to Jenascia and tells her that she is going to be staying in the competition. Jenascia's face lights up as Tyra tells her she is still in the running to become "America's Next Top ON TIME Model." In the end, it seems the judges were not able to overlook Anna's bouncy runway walk and non-participation in the photo shoot.

Anna tells us she doesn't regret any decision she made. "It hurt for a few moments, but I am stronger now, and you know, I can get back up and still keep on going," she says, packing her bags to leave the Big Apple and go back to her husband and son.
