YOANNA IS AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL
Out of the twelve beautiful girls that began the long journey to become AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, only one can earn that honor. Each of the three remaining girls have worked hard and grown both as individuals and as models. The judges were left with a tough decision, and ultimately they chose Yoanna , the 23-year-old babysitter from Jacksonville, Florida, with a face made for beauty and a lifelong passion for the fashion industry, as the winner of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL.
DOWN TO THREE
It is down to three girls competing to become AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. After last week's elimination, Yoanna, the 23-year-old babysitter from Jacksonville, Florida, was very surprised that April was the one to leave. Mercedes , the 22-year-old waitress from Valencia, California, has learned that dealing with her lupus is just controlling her ailment and not allowing herself to complain about it. Yoanna places a call to her mother and starts to realize just how lonely this industry can be. Shandi , the 21-year-old Walgreen's clerk from Kansas City, Missouri, calls her boyfriend Eric. After she cheated on him last week, he says he's not mad; he just cares about her right now. He tells her to not give up.
The next morning, they get Tyra Mail informing them that they will be doing a beauty shoot. The competition is on, and the girls start to size up their competitors. Shandi worries that Yoanna is her strongest competition, because Yoanna knows so much about the fashion industry. Yoanna thinks that Mercedes has a great shot at winning this contest because she photographs well and has a great personality. Mercedes thinks that Shandi is her toughest competition because she has changed so much over the course of the competition and works really well in high fashion.
BEAUTY SHOTS
The girls arrive at their final photo shoot and are greeted by art director Jay Manuel. He tells them that they each have a completely different and beautiful look, and will therefore get a unique, high-end, stylized beauty ad tailored to them. Their creative team for this shoot will be Nole Marin, stylist; Gianluca Guaitoli, hairstylist; and Massimo Costoli, photographer.
Yoanna is told that she is going to be wearing a biker's helmet on her shoot because her face is so strong. Mercedes' hair is puffed out into what she calls a "Buckwheat from 'The Little Rascals'" style. Nole then puts wire into her hair, which Mercedes isn't to sure about, but she goes along with it because she loves Nole's funkiness.
YOANNA'S SUPER CUT
The stress of the final photo shoot is starting to show. Yoanna just wants everything to be perfect for her shoot, and she notices that a little bit of hair is coming out of the back of her helmet. The hairstylist, Gianluca, is busy with another girl. Yoanna proceeds to find clippers and runs off to the bathroom to trim her hair herself. She ends up taking a huge chunk out of the back of her hairline and quickly learns why she should have other people cut her hair. Jay thinks that it might be just the competition, but is afraid "she might be breaking down inside."
BUCKWHEAT TO BIKER CHICK
Mercedes, all wired up, goes in front of the camera first. She loves the way she looks and describes herself as an "Aztec warrior, Zulu, African thing." Mercedes zeros in the on camera and says she just thought of the camera as the eyes of Yoanna and Shandi. Shandi says the photo shoot is a little difficult, because she has problem showing intensity in her eyes. Mercedes is watching this and feels that Shandi looks scared. Next up is futuristic-helmet-wearing Yoanna. Mercedes, still watching from the wings, is feeling that everyone loves Yoanna, but wants to tell her, "Bitch, you ain't going nowhere!"
DSQUARED2
Back at the apartment, the girls get Tyra Mail telling them that they will be meeting with DSquared2, a very hot fashion designer of the moment. They will meet with the brothers, Dean and Dan Caten, who make up DSquared2, to audition to be in the final fashion show. Mercedes goes one on one first for her interview, and the brothers think that she has a bubbly and wonderful personality. Shandi thinks that she can bring her originality and realness to the fashion show. The brothers think she is a beautiful girl and an open palette. Yoanna comes off to them as very professional and having a love for fashion. Next, Dean and Dan fit them in some of DSquared2 clothes. Mercedes thinks that the line looks better on her than the other two girls and both Yoanna and Shandi feel it.
SURPRISE ELIMINATION
The next day the girls get Tyra Mail that drops a bombshell: they will be meeting with the judges in a couple of hours, and one person will be eliminated. Yoanna says the reality is "there are three of us, but only one prize." Shandi is shocked because she didn't think that the elimination was coming so soon.
After getting ready, the girls are brought in to meet the judges. For this elimination they are: Tyra Banks, Janice Dickinson, Eric Nicholson, Nigel Barker and Dean and Dan Caten from DSquared2. Mercedes is up first for her individual evaluation. First, though, the judges want to see her walk, to gauge how she has improved and to see how she will do in the fashion show. Tyra says that in her walk she glides really well, but she needs to pick up her feet more. The judges and Mercedes are then shown her photo from the high-end beauty ad. Janice loves it and says that if she ever touches her face, "I will come after you." Tyra calls it fierce, and Nigel says she nailed the beauty. Eric loves the intensity of the stare, and the brothers feel this picture shows that she is a chameleon.
Shandi walks for the judges. Janice loves her hip attitude, and revels in the fact that Shandi has come light years from where she was when she first started this competition. Even though her walk has improved, Eric still thinks it needs to be better. Tyra knows that Shandi has it inside her, but points out that at this point in the competition it isn't about her knowing it, its about everyone seeing it. Her photo is shown to the judges. Janice calls it "girl next door in mommy's paint," and says it is lovely. Eric still sees a lack of confidence is Shandi's eyes.
Next it is Yoanna's turn to walk. The brothers say, "Not good, not bad. I think you need to work on your style." Eric calls the walk conventional. Her picture is shown to the judges and Janice calls it "moon rocket girl," and gives her eyes in the picture high marks. When it is Tyra's time to chime in, she says that she feels Yoanna has the strongest walk out of the remaining girls, but when it was time to walk for the judges, she fell to pieces.
The judges now deliberate to decide whom to send home. Holding up Yoanna's picture, the brothers say, "A picture speaks a thousand words, and this girl is giving you face." Nigel wonders if Yoanna has the rest of the package. Janice thinks Mercedes won the walking competition and says her body is amazing. Nigel thinks that Shandi has what it takes photographically.
AND THE FINAL TWO ARE…
The girls are brought back in to meet their fate. Mercedes is called forward first and told that she has come so far, from commercial to edgy, and her beauty shot saved her. Yoanna and Shandi are asked to step forward. Yoanna started off very strong in the eyes of the judges and came in and did her thing. The opposite is true for Shandi. The judges think she started off "kinda weak, but then she showed us that she could be edgy and be beautiful." However, Tyra says that they both fell apart in front of the judges. Tyra questions how they will handle being in front of hundreds of people at a fashion show if they can't handle being in front of six people in that room.
With that, Tyra calls forward Yoanna and sends Shandi home. The girls hug goodbye, and Shandi says, "Oh my God, at points, I look in the mirror and it's even hard to recognize myself. It's hard to even try to remember how I used to be. And, I feel like I've grown so much," Shandi says. She says this competition really helped her find herself.
FINAL FASHION SHOW
The next day, Yoanna and Mercedes go with Tyra and are shown the hall where they will be doing the fashion show. Yoanna can feel that her dreams are so close. Tyra gives them hints on what to do on the runway. Mercedes just looks around and sees how professional everything is, and it reality of the situation hits her.
Twenty minutes until the beginning of the show, the clothes are being fitted. Make-up is being applied. Guests and photographers are filing in. All the other models are in the back, talking and getting ready.
Five minutes are left when Jay yells that he needs the girls in their first outfit. Yoanna tries to concentrate on not being nervous, because it is what tripped her up in front of the judges the day before. Janice, Eric and Nigel are seated in the front row of the audience. Time ticks away as Tyra and J. Alexander take their seats.
The countdown begins, and the show is on. Light bulbs flash as the models emerge. The time has come, and Yoanna has her moment. She struts out on the runway, and she says it was a "high, like an adrenaline rush." Mercedes sashays down the catwalk in style. After they walk, both girls are rushed backstage and change into their second outfit. On the runway for the second time, Mercedes actually passes Yoanna and does a few extra poses at the end of the runway to try and outshine Yoanna.
YOANNA'S SHOE TROUBLE
In her haste to change clothes backstage, Yoanna trips and breaks a heel. Everyone rushes around trying to find another shoe, but none fit. Finally, moments before she is needed on stage, they decide that she will wear Mercedes' pink, flowery shoes although they don't really go with what she is wearing. She works it anyway.
After the show, Jay tells them that they just rocked. The girls hug, relieved and happy it's over. They head home and get Tyra Mail, telling them that tomorrow, the judges will decide who will be AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL.
The next day as the girls pack, they weigh in on their competition. Although Mercedes is a beautiful person, Yoanna would be heartbroken to lose because she's wanted it since she was a little girl. Mercedes feels that Yoanna is also a great person, but if she wins, Mercedes is going to pull out her hair, screaming, "It wasn't meant to be!"
FINAL DECISION
The girls go to meet the judges for the final time. Only Tyra Banks, Janice Dickinson, Eric Nicholson, and Nigel Barker will make the decision, because they are the ones who have seen Yoanna and Mercedes throughout the entire journey. The prize for the winner of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL is a contract with IMG Models, one of the top modeling management companies in the world and the one Tyra has been signed with for many years; a cosmetics campaign with Sephora, the leading beauty retailer; and a spread in Jane Magazine, the hippest, trendiest magazine on the market.
Mercedes is shown the tape of her in the fashion show and gets high marks from the judges. Nigel says that she looked "fierce" at the fashion show. Yoanna is told that she was fantastic at the end, making a connection with the photographer. Tyra says that both of the girls mixed in with the experienced models flawlessly. Yoanna calls the event nerve-wracking, but she was on an adrenaline high doing it. The girls draw some criticism when Tyra notes that Yoanna was on the rhythm too much, and that Mercedes over-worked it at the end of the runway.
The girls are shown the best photographs from the whole competition. In all of their pictures, they are given universal praise for working the camera and growing as models. Nigel says they have taken all their weeks of training and really turned it into great final photographs.
The judges begin to deliberate for the final time. Janice sees Mercedes working in every country on earth. Yoanna, for Eric, makes more of an impression in an exciting way. Tyra says that Yoanna lives and breathes the industry, and her face is striking. Nigel says that Mercedes has the personality that you want to book. Eric comes back with the fact that he feels Yoanna has the X-factor. But, Tyra says, Mercedes has this top model personality. Nigel, however, doesn't think that Mercedes has that international face. Janice then asks Nigel who did better on the runway, and he says he preferred watching Mercedes.
AND THE WINNER IS…
Mercedes and Yoanna are brought back in to find out who is AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. Tyra asks them what was going through their minds during the wait, and both girls admit uncertainty and insecurity. Tyra says that no matter what happens, they have come a long way.
Tyra gives them one last critique. She says that Yoanna started off as this "quirky, weird girl" and she has transformed into this "hip, stylish, gorgeous thing," and a face like hers doesn't come along often. Mercedes is told she started off as the cute mall girl, but now she is edgy.
The girls turn their attention to the monitor where the winner will be revealed. They wait for the moment that will change one of their lives. Yoanna's face appears and Tyra declares: "Yoanna, you are AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL." Yoanna breaks down in tears and cries, "Thank you!"
Yoanna has lived and breathed fashion, style and modeling since childhood. Her dream has come true, and the fashion industry had better hold on tight because Yoanna is about to rock their world.
