XIOMARA IS SUNK
This week the girls are taken to a personality coach and an intuitive advisor to learn how to capture the charisma so important to becoming a top model. Although Xiomara, the 25-year-old bartender from Morganville, New Jersey, possesses great charisma in real life, it doesn't translate to her photos, including this week's underwater photo shoot. Because of that, the judges choose to cut Xiomara from the competition.

LEARNING WHO YOU ARE

"The fashion industry is all about race," Tyra Banks told April , the 23-year-old corporate business account manager from Miami Beach, Florida, during her auditions. April, who is half Japanese and half Caucasian, is having doubts about her self-image. April and Camille , the 25-year-old student from Mamaroneck, New York, talk about how difficult it is for women of color to make it in the fashion industry. "Before I decided to enter into the industry, I never really thought about my ethnicity," April lets us know. On the other hand, Sara , the 22-year-old hostess from Seattle, Washington, is "proud of (her) Persian culture," she says. The only problem is that in her culture, being a model is a considered equal to being a whore.

TYRA LENDS A HAND
Tyra stops by and, after engaging in some impromptu jump rope, she meets one on one with the girls. Tyra tells a beaming Xiomara that she loves her toughness, but she feels that Xiomara is doing "the cinnamon thing" and it just isn't her. Catie , the 18-year-old wire stripper from Willmar, Minnesota, tells Tyra that she needs to find her comfort zone and still be herself.

Camille sits down with Tyra and immediately complains, "This is the first time in my life that I have ever been called a diva," referring to the judging last week when Tyra told her that she had a "diva attitude." Tyra tells her that being a model is about having "quiet confidence."

Sara asks for advice from Tyra about what to do about her father, who has been calling and leaving messages for Sara. Sara lets Tyra know that her dad doesn't know that she is competing in AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. Tyra says that talking to her dad will be something she has to do. Sara worries that if she does, it would be over between her and her dad. Tyra says that the anger and sadness she sees in Sara's eyes in photo shoots may be coming from the unresolved issues with her dad.

Shandi , the 21-year-old Walgreen's clerk from Kansas City, Missouri, tells Tyra that she thinks she's grown more in the last couple of weeks than she has in the past couple of years. Tyra tells her, "I don't want you going back to your life thinking: 'Well there's always Walgreen's.'" When Mercedes , the 22-year-old waitress from Valencia, California, sits down to talk with Tyra, Tyra tells her that on the last photo shoot, she thought she had an attitude. Mercedes said that during that photo shoot she felt tired, and she apologized to Tyra if she thought it was attitude. Mercedes, who is suffering from lupus and has been hiding her disease from everyone, feels "herself draining down."

MS. PERSONALITY
The next day the girls are taken to meet with Sam Christensen, a personality coach. "We're working with these girls to get them familiar with what about themselves that other people identify with so they can talk about themselves," he says. He is going to teach them the "magic of charisma." First order of business is to gather some information about how everyone else perceives them. They are all given papers and told to mark off adjectives that describe each of the girls. All of the papers will be collected and each girl given the results of how everyone sees them.

Xiomara is "adventurous and headstrong." Yoanna , the 23-year-old babysitter from Jacksonville, Florida, is "stylish," while Shandi is "quirky." Camille gets her list and reads off what the other girls think of her. To them, she is "superior, relentless, headstrong, defiant, outspoken, cunning, aggressive, opinionated, demanding and single-minded." According to the girls, she was not happy with her results and she felt attacked. Sam tells the girls that charisma is being able to deal with people's opinions and judgments.

Next, the girls get up in front of everyone and dig a little deeper about who they are. Mercedes loves her mother more than anyone because she allows Mercedes to be who she is. Shandi tells everyone that she has gone through life as the black sheep of her family and not really having anyone to talk to about it with. The worst thing that Sara has ever done was lying to her father about what she wants to do with her life. After they are done, Sam tells them that charisma comes from public self-acceptance.

NAMES AND NUMBERS
The girls are visited by J. Alexander, who brings a special guest, Suzannah Galland, a intuitive advisor, or as the girls call her, "a psychic." Just based on the names and birthday, she will tell the girls something about themselves. She tells Mercedes that her body is weak, but her mind isn't. Sometimes she wants to do more than she physically can. Mercedes is in tears, but still doesn't tell the girls about her illness. Suzannah tells Sara that her father will hate the fact that she is a model, but secretly will love it. Shandi is told she needs family and that she needs to realize that the girls around her are her family and that makes her very rich.

MEET JANICE
Sam visits them the next day and tells them that they will have to do a mock interview with a surprise guest and use the skills he taught them the day before. The winning girl will win a shopping spree. Who is the surprise interviewer? Janice Dickinson ! First question: what's the craziest place you have had sex? For Xiomara, it was a broom closet at her high school. Camille had sex stuck on a Ferris Wheel. Camille had sex in a duck on a Ferris Wheel. Catie shocks Janice by telling her that she is a virgin. When asked if they could be a judge and eliminate anyone, most of the girls quickly respond, "Camille." Sara embraces her roots and tells Janice she should win this competition to give a good representation of a Middle Eastern woman. Shandi shows brutal honesty by telling Janice that she has been hiding her past drug use. Janice asked her how she quit. Shandi tells us that she was arrested for robbery and given two years probation. "It's a part of my life I went through and it's in my past," Shandi reveals. Janice loves her honesty.

Janice tells Mercedes that she has noticed her energy go down lately. Janice wants to know what happened. After a moment of contemplation, Mercedes, for one of the first times in her life, comes clean about her disease. "I don't want to make excuses that I have an illness, but I do. I have lupus." She tells Janice that it does bring down her energy, but she is trying to fight through it.

Janice brings the girls back in and tells them that part of charisma is being able to admit your flaws and being honest. With that she feels Mercedes won the competition because "of her honesty. When she shared she had lupus that's when you reached me." The girls are shocked and had no idea. Mercedes is beaming and she gets to pick one girl to go shopping with her. She picks Sara.

SINK OR SWIM
Tyra Mail comes and tells the girls that they need to "sink or swim." They are taken to a studio with a giant tank of water and Jay Manuel , art director, tells them that it is a fish theme for Queénch Water. Their photographer is George Holtz. The stylist for their shoot will be Nole Marin and his dog, Mini.

Each girl climbs into a tank of water and submerges herself, and George snaps off pictures. Sara is first and really wants to work on her eyes. "That was 10 times better," says Jay. Catie is told not to be a pufferfish. Camille jumps in the water and strikes a pose, which Jay Manual calls "drag queen vogue." Xiomara is used to holding her nose whenever she goes underwater and is nervous that she won't be able to do it. She also can't keep her eyes open underwater. Nole said that Xiomara is a beautiful girl, but in the water "she looked like a walrus." Shandi goes underwater and looks terrified. Mercedes pulls it off, and she realizes that she will survive in this competition.

Later that night, Mercedes is told that because of her win in the personality contest, she and Sara will be getting a special visitor. The doors open and out walk their moms. They are thrilled and excited. Tyra joins them with her mom, Carolyn London. They talk about support, the business and finding yourself. It is an uplifting visit to not only Mercedes and Sara, but to everyone in the house.

SELLING YOURSELF TO THE JUDGES
Elimination time. The girls are brought in to meet the judges. They are Janice Dickinson, Eric Nicholson , Nigel Barker and guest judge Nole Marin and Mini. This week's test is to be a spokesmodel for a made-up beauty line called ANTM Beauty. They will be evaluated on how well they present themselves for 60 seconds.

Sara is up first and starts off strong, but "she kinda fell into the homegirl thing," as Eric says. April pitches the beauty products, but Eric feels like it is an infomercial and Tyra says her delivery had no personality. Xiomara and Shandi both stumble a bit when trying to sell the judges on ANTM Beauty. Xiomara is told her delivery was "scatterbrained" and Shandi is told to have more confidence when she delivers her pitch. Catie does a great job, according to Nigel. She just needed some more force and power.

Mercedes "rocks" according to Janice when she makes all the judges laugh by telling them that ANTM Beauty is for everyone, from her mother with fair skin to her father when he goes out in drag! Janice is let down when she finds out that Mercedes' dad doesn't really do drag. Camille comes in and tells the judges that she is AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL and that is why they should buy ANTM Beauty. For Janice, Camille sounded "arrogant and it made her feel uncomfortable."

Sara's picture is a little to "bicepy" for Janice. Nigel says that Sara's eyes were the best he's ever seen them. Of April's picture, Tyra says that she looks like she is in a regular studio posing, not underwater, which is extremely hard to do. Xiomara sees her picture and the judges ask, "What happened here?" Nole tells her that she isn't trying to catch fish with her open mouth. Her eyes are closed and she needed to have them open. Tyra calls Shandi's picture playfully "freaky." Nole critiques her, but Nigel pipes in and says that she got the picture. Nole fights back that he wanted to see a hundred great pictures, not just one.

Nigel is very impressed by the way that Shandi isn't in tears from all the criticism like some of the other girls would've been. Janice calls Catie's pose "insane and I love it!" Nigel doesn't think Mercedes picture stands out, but Nole calls it a "visual orgasm." Janice calls Yoanna's picture the "worst I have ever seen in my whole life" partially because her hair looks like a cockatoo.

DELIBERATIONS
The judges deliberate amongst themselves about whom to eliminate. Sara looks like an "East German swimmer" to Janice. April gets an A from Janice on the picture but "a D to F" on how she sold the product. Nigel thinks that Xiomara has a very pretty face, but is very heavy in the bottom part of her jaw. Eric thinks Xiomara has potential and Tyra loves her "New York attitude." Mercedes doesn't get high marks for her photo, but "her personality is so endearing." Nole thinks Catie could be a lot more edgy and fashion forward. Tyra doesn't think that this competition is the place for Camille and her "darn know-it-all" attitude

WHO WILL SINK?
The girls are brought back in to learn their fates. Tyra has seven pictures for eight girls. Sara, Mercedes, April, Yoanna and Catie are called forward, leaving Shandi, Camille and Xiomara. Shandi is given her picture and told she has undergone the most amazing transformation.

Camille is told that she has a problem with people telling her what to do. If she has a problem with that she will not be a top model. Xiomara is told that the judges love her personality, but on photo shoots she doesn't take direction well. With that, Tyra hands a picture to Camille and tells her that she is still in the running to become AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL.

Xiomara leaves with tears in her eyes. "I've learned that you can never listen to anyone but yourself. Go with you. Don't try to be someone you're not," she says. She writes the girls a note saying, "I love you all," and packs her bags and heads out of the apartment.
