Between Mainz and and Cologne we also find the famous Loreley, a rocky mountain that juts out into the river, where currents and bends made navigation of hand-operated boats for fishermen and merchants in the old days especially hazardous.-

It is here where the legend of Loreley evolved: It is said that sometimes a fair maiden sat on top of the rock overlooking the river, sang a lovely song with her golden voice, while combing her golden hair with a golden comb.
The boatsmen were so mesmerized by her sight that they paid no attention to navigation and were swept to their deaths when their boats crashed against the cliffs.
