The Rhine is the most important
river in Europe, both historically and commercially. It is 700 Miles (1126
km.) in length and rises in Switzerland and later follows the Swiss-Austria,
Swiss-German and Franco-German frontiers before crossing into northwestern
Germany and the Netherlands, to reach the North Sea.
From Mainz to
Cologne the river is deep and narrow and it is in this area where it is
considered it's most beautiful and has been praised in song and poetry for a
long time.
This part of the Rhinevalley is dominated by many castles,
some originating in the 11. and 12. century. All but one, (the Marksburg) fell
victim to wars, skirmishes and the elements and only ruins remained. However,
enterprising business people are restoring some of the ruins into hotels and
elegant restaurants.
The sloping banks of the river and temperate
climate allow picturesque vinyards to produce some of the most renown
wines.
Take the tour from Mainz to Cologne
by selecting the slide show.
Also, a visit to the Loreley is
most enjoyable! |
