Why Do We Paddle Boys? Because they're boys

Boys don't pay attention. They get out of control. They get off track. They get wild and crazy.

Why? Partly because of some crazy mixture adrenalin and testosterone in their bloodstream. And partly because that's what our culture expects of them.

Sometimes in order to get them to pay attention and to get them under control a swift and effective solution is a couple swats across the butt.

Why do we paddle boys? Because they're boys. Boys in two ways.

First, they are boys and not girls. Boys are expected to deal with pain. They are supposed to be able to take it and show they can take it.

Second, they are boys and not men. Boys are not the ones in charge. They are not in control. They are not the ones who say what is right or wrong.

Boys and paddling go together. It part of the nature of the beast.

Boy's are great because they have short memories. You can paddle their rumps today, and tomorrow they'll pal around with you, no grudges. A couple smiles, a couple jokes, a few punches to the arm.

Unfortunately too many boys grow up not to be be men, but to be old women. With long memories, unforgiving, vengeful.

Let men be boys again. Play hard today. Take your knocks. Fight with your enemies and then take them on as friends. Or leave them far behind. And in the process, let's paddle their rumps once in a while!
