Launch - Transister
Since the demise of his band Danny Wilson, Scotsman
Gary Clark's playing, writing and production skills have surfaced
on fine discs by Boo Hewerdine and British singer Lauren Christy.
Most recently, he's teamed up with L.A. bassist (and former King
L bandmate) Eric Pressly and British singer Keely Hawkes as Transister.
The trio's debut is one of those rare records that, after delivering
some clever pop tunes, reveals layers of challenging and ear-pleasing
production subtleties with each listen. Placing Hawkes's trendy,
little-girl voice front-and-center gives Clark and Pressly a free
hand to mine a rich variety of sounds, instruments and effects.
While the first single, 'Look Who's Perfect Now' has a
sassy theme and a hook big enough for radio, it also has some razor-cut
segues and ear-twisting treatments. 'Head' takes the formula
a step further, moving between sparse, sensual verses and eerie,
guitar-thick choruses. Over a percolating loop, 'Falling Off
The World' combines atmospheric textures with Hawkes purring
a "love you so much I could kill you" theme. This is,
without a doubt, a band to be reckoned with.
